Flora’s designs combine quality, craftsmanship and the glamour of India's past
Using opulent hand carved gemstones, rich golds and glittering diamonds, Flora Bhattachary creates luxurious jewellery that combines quality, craftsmanship and the glamour of India's past. Based in London’s Hatton Garden, Flora’s wonderfully rich and textured designs are infused with gemstones and designed to last a lifetime.
An ancient gift from an archaeological site sparked Flora’s love for jewels
“I first fell in love with jewellery when I was given a tiny ancient carved carnelian bird at an archaeological site in Taxila, on the borders of Pakistan and India. I was there visiting as a child with my parents, and one of the workers on the site took a shine to me and handed me a tiny ancient pendant. It was so extraordinary to be given something so old and so beautiful - I think that I was in love with jewellery from then on - although it took me a long time and a lot of growing up to begin to make and design it myself!”
“I’m a Londoner and even when I travel, my heart really belongs to London."
She’s a Londoner at heart
“I’m a Londoner and even when I travel, my heart really belongs to London. My mother and my grandmother were both very much Londoners too, and I think that has rooted me very strongly.”
Her designs evoke the glamour of her Grandmother
“My grandmother was brought up living in the British Museum (my grandfather was keeper of books at the British Library). Later, she lived in Highgate in a beautiful house full of antiques and Art Deco pieces. She was very glamorous and when she looked after my sister and me as kids, she would take us to visit all of her eccentric and artistic friends. I inherited a ruby garnet and diamond suite from her, a very ‘high’ jewellery necklace and earrings. They evoke all the glamour and beauty that I associate with her and that I try to bring to my jewellery designs.”
She likes strong independent women
“I design jewellery for women with attitude. I like strong independent women who are creative with what they wear and daring in their style. I want them to be empowered by my designs – to make a statement about who they are and to be bold in how they wear my jewellery."

Flora launched her own jewellery line after working for other brands and receiving a number of awards
After studying jewellery to degree level, Flora was lucky enough to work for a number of British designers, jewellery brands and galleries. She then went on to do an MA at prestigious Central St Martins. “After I left St Martins I received a number of awards from the Goldsmiths Company, and was named a Hot 100 Nextgem by Professional Jeweller. It was then that I decided to go it alone and launched my own brand.”
Her designs stand the test of time
“I create design led jewellery for fashion conscious women, but I want my jewellery to endure. Our pieces are all handmade using the highest quality materials and craftsmanship in the UK. I ensure that my designs will look as good in 20 years’ time as they do today.”
All of the inspiration for Flora's designs come from the influence of India
“My work is rooted in my own personal history and my family’s links with India. My family first went to work for the East India Company back in the 18th century and those links have continued to the present day. All of the inspiration for my designs comes from the influence of India – whether through personal stories, family history or Asian artefacts and designs.”
"I love to think of my jewellery being worn by women to help them stand out in the corporate world - and to signify their achievements.”
Her materials are locally sourced from London’s historic jewellery quarter
“I’m based at the Goldsmiths Centre and I source the majority of my materials and stones locally from London’s historic jewellery quarter, Hatton Garden. Many of the best craftsmen and gem dealers are based here - ensuring that I can achieve the highest quality of workmanship and materials in my designs. All of our pieces can be made in Fairtrade gold and ethically sourced stones if requested.”
Powerful women love her designs
“I’ve recently sold a number of special one off designs to top female lawyers. I love to think of my jewellery being worn by women to help them stand out in the corporate world - and to signify their achievements.”
