KIMSU was started by two talented creatives: Sue Woo Kim, a trained architect and interior designer, and Roberto Bertinetti, a high-flying entrepreneur. Combining Sue’s creative background and Roberto’s expertise in marketing, KIMSU is a socially responsible jewellery brand creating strong architectural designs that imitate symbols of strength. Based in Berlin, we chat to the duo about their story.
How did you start KIMSU?
Roberto: “Our brand began the day that Sue called me at 11 in the morning saying ‘Roberto, I just quit my job!’. Sue always had a passion for jewels, and I always had an entrepreneurial spirit. On that day Sue triggered it all: we decided our old life was behind us, and the day after KIMSU was born.”
When did you first fall in love with jewellery?
Sue: “I fell in love with jewels as a child, when, as per Korean tradition, I received a golden ring at my first birthday. To cut a long story short, I have always been in love with jewellery all my life!”
What inspires your designs?
Sue: “It mainly comes from architectural geometric shapes, considering my background as an interior designer.”
How do you ensure your jewellery is ethical and sustainable?
Roberto: “We make sure that our jewels are made only with certified recycled silver, that all environmental regulations are obeyed and that chemicals are disposed of correctly. For us our environment is a top priority and we are very proud of this!”
How do you want someone to feel when they wear your jewellery?
Both: “We take a philosophy that even the tiniest symbols, gestures and experiences can ignite a passion within. KIMSU pushes women to find the confidence to be themselves.”
If you could only wear one piece from your collection, which would it be?
Sue: “Our Rotondo Ring Gold because I think it’s unique and fun, which reflects my personality.”
What music do you have playing whilst you are working?
Roberto: “Rock n Roll/Italian songs.”
What’s your favourite quote?
Sue: "Each morning we are born again. What we do today is what matters most.” – Buddha.
Roberto: "Never, never, never give up." - Winston Churchill
