Founded by husband and wife team Andrea and Ansula Usai in the fall of 2010, the KOKKU jewellery brand is driven by the following principles – Simplicity, Ethical Commitment, Innovation, and Identity.

For Andrea and Ansula, their brand is a deeply personal endeavour, and the pieces they have crafted for their collections are representations of the intimate moments in their lives. This includes their engagement, the birth of their children, and more. They hope their jewellery will hold similar meaning to those who wear them.

How did your brand begin?

"KOKKU was launched in 2010 and is centered on the idea of preserving a cultural aspect of Sardinia and devotedly protecting the art of filigree, an art form that is progressively dying in Sardinia."

Values are really important to us at JewelStreet. What are your core brand values?

"The filigree technique was brought to Sardinia by the Phoenicians 3,000 years ago. Since then it has been passed on from generations. Our core value is to create new designs that will find new market space that will preserve this art from dying."

Where do you get inspiration for your designs?

"We represent the 5th generation of a family business where, my uncle, his father, grandfather and great grandfather all were filigree artists. Our pieces are inspired by Greek-Roman and Byzantine designs influenced by Arabic and Sardinian traditions."

How is your jewellery made?

"It is entirely handmade using the ancient technique of filigree. This consists of tightly twining fine threads (gold or silver) to create a ridge pattern then formed into various harmonious shapes which are soldered together to create the piece."

Are there any specific manufacturing/crafting techniques you use?

"We use the filigree technique which is one of the oldest and most beautiful art forms developed by man. The only way to reach the level of precision that is found in our pieces is to make it entirely by hand."

Can you recall a particular moment with a client that will stay with you forever?

"We had wedding rings stuck in customs and 3 days before the wedding the client still did not have the rings. We made the rings again and sent them with overnight delivery and they got them just in time. The client could not be more grateful for this."

How do you want someone to feel when they wear your jewellery?

"We always tell customers that you don’t buy a KOKKU you adopt a KOKKU. We encourage them to understand that what they are wearing is a wearable work of art, a rarity made with techniques that are in risk of dying if not preserved in the way we do."

Do you have any exciting future plans and where do you see your brand in 5 years?

"We have found an encouraging trend in our growth pattern. On this wave our aim is to employ more filigree artists and in 5 years create a school of filigree for new generations of Sardinians. This will help us preserving this art form."
