Nightscrafts by Kasia is an independent Australian brand created by designer and mum of two Kasia. From carefully crafted and custom personalised wall hanging designs, we chat with Kasia today about what inspired her to start her businesses and much more as she takes us behind the scenes in today's interview.

How did your brand begin?

I thought that you could not learn how to be artistic. But it turns out that you can. It just somehow happened to me!

My second child was only 8 months old when it all began. Veronika was terrible at sleeping, she was waking up a lot at night! This totally messed up my sleeping patterns… I just simply could not fall asleep until late at night.

I didn't want to waste my time lying in bed. Watching TV is not my thing either. My husband suggested that I should try making a macramé plant hanger. I liked this idea! But it was not that easy at the start! I deliberately spent quite a few evenings watching YouTube tutorials trying to learn how to do all these macramé knots. It was very frustrating at first, but I finally got hang of it!

And that was the beginning of my adventure with macramé. Since then, I could not stop making up different designs and patterns. I was getting better and more efficient at it as time went on. Over time, I have developed my own style and technique.

Where do you draw inspiration from for your designs?

For me, inspiration is everywhere and comes from different sources – nature, seasons, the internet, magazines.

How are your products made?

My products are 100% handcrafted - only at night.

The main ingredient for my designs is rope plus a few other bits and bobs - beads, driftwood, yarn, and bamboo. My preference is to use recycled cotton rope.

Also, I do my best to minimize waste and reuse all the off-cuts whenever I can. I usually make some one-off pieces with all the left-over rope from different projects. I feel good knowing that I produce minimal waste.

How do you want someone to feel when they wear/use your designs?

I truly love what I do so I want my customers to feel that love when they look at that macramé piece I crafted for them.

Do you have any exciting future plans and where do you see your brand in 5 years?

My goal is very simple – I plan to continue my play with macramé with no real pressure on how big I want it to be in 5 years’ time. At this point, I’m just going with the flow. We will see where this takes me!

What music do you play in the studio whilst you’re working?

All my macramé work happens at night-time when my kids are in bed so unfortunately, I cannot go too crazy with loud tunes although I would love to. I love to mix it up and listen to audiobooks, podcasts, or some relaxing tunes while working.

What's the best piece of advice you've been given?

We hear a lot of different advice in our lives – from our parents, teachers, bosses and sometimes even strangers. A great piece of advice can guide us to becoming a better version of ourselves. The best advice I have ever received is to never forget to stop and appreciate how far you have come and that you can learn anything that you put your mind to.

If you could travel to one place in the world right now, where would it be and why?

If could travel anywhere in the world, I would probably go home. I have seen enough of the world to know that being with my family is more important than going on some fancy vacation. I have found myself living on the other side of the world for over 14 years and to be able to see my family and friends would be more rewarding than any travelling experience I could have.

What drew you to JewelStreet?

I was drawn to Jewel Street because I felt it would give me an opportunity to grow. Also, because it's based in the UK.  I spent 4 years of my life living in the UK, I have lots of great memories from there.
