Thinking of popping the question? Unsure about where or when to propose? Take a look at our top 10 places to get down on one knee, and give your unsuspecting fiance the surprise of their life.
You may be asking yourself a number of questions. Is it going to be special enough? Will the location be appropriate? Will he or she like the place you've chosen?
Understandingly, the process of planning a proposal is steeped in anxiety and nerves, but all you can do is trust in yourself. Try not to put too much pressure on the moment, as long as the both of you are together, everything else will fall in to place.
1. On holiday
According to recent research, a huge percentage of couples get engaged whilst on holiday. Is it the privacy, the picturesque views, or the company that creates the perfect proposal place? Of course, having your loved one beside you is more than enough, but a backdrop of the Eiffel tower can’t hurt! Likewise, as this lovely couple below show, a great view is the basis for an amazing proposal.
2. In a helicopter
It would be hard to say no when you are proposed to on a helicopter. Firstly, there’s nowhere to run and escape to! In all seriousness, this can be an amazing once-in-a-lifetime experience, and the proposal will be the icing on the cake. Consider writing the words ‘will you marry me?’ on a nearby beach, or have a few friends lay out giant lettering on the ground. Have champagne and glasses stowed away ready for the big moment.
3. After a skydive
When thinking about places to propose, not many people think the sky. Throw a couple of parachutes (and some trusty instructors) into the mix and you’ve got yourself the perfect ingredients for an unforgettable proposal. Bare in mind the altitude and wind force hitting your face on the way down, so it’s perhaps a good idea to pop the question once you’ve reached the ground and the adrenaline is still pumping.
4. In bed, with breakfast
Sometimes a proposal can be just as special in a place where your partner is least expecting it. Proposing with breakfast in bed, for example, creates a sweet and thoughtful private moment. Write the words ‘will you marry me?’ at the bottom of her coffee cup and wait until she finishes her drink and gets the ultimate shock when you drop down on one knee in your pyjamas.
5. In a public place, flash mob style
Sometimes shouting your love from the rooftops just isn’t enough, and a large group doing synchronised dancing to Bruno Mars ‘Marry You’ is. Usually taking place in a crowded shopping centre, or in a bustling town square, a public proposal will grab a lot of attention. You don’t need to worry about hiring a professional film company to record the moment. Instead, ask a few pedestrians to stop and record the proposal for you - perfect! You’ll probably go viral.
6. Where you had your first date
Sentimental and nostalgic locations speak volumes. When choosing the perfect place to propose, think back to the first place you met, or the location of your first date. This is an incredibly thoughtful and touching decision, that will resonate with your loved one. Sometimes being low key and romantic does the job, and you’ll be walking away with a ring on her finger!
7. During a sports game
Sports games are notoriously one of the most difficult, but also one of the best, locations to pop the question. Do you do it before the game? After the game? During half time? Get in touch with the PR department at the stadium of your choice and make them aware of your plans. It is likely that they have assisted with proposals in the past, so they will be there to make the moment as seamless as possible. Ensure to buy an aisle seat, as it can be difficult to actually get down on one knee when leg room is restricted!
8. At a festival
Festivals are another great place to get engaged. Why not ask your other half to marry you when you’re having the time of your life? Good vibes, good music and good company are all you need. Making sure your partner is happy and relaxed in the environment where you plan to propose is so important.
9. At a theme park or carnival
Plan an unsuspecting date night out to a theme park or carnival and propose with a backdrop of celestial sights and fairground delights. Sweeten your date up with candyfloss, and let her win you a bear that you can keep forever to remember the day she said yes.
10. Underwater, or at the aquarium
Our last idea for a place to propose is at the aquarium. You can arrange to jump in the water and hold a sign up with the important question written on it, or like the couple below, you can get down on one knee with the beautiful back-lighting of the magical aquatic waters.
