Want to know how to dress up your basic t-shirt? We all have one hidden away in the back of the closet, looking lonely and gathering dust. You love to wear it, and it’s so comfy… but it’s just not satisfying your style savvy persona.
Take a read of our top tips for dressing up any basic clothing item. You don’t need to purchase an entire new wardrobe to create a variety of different looks. Grab your t-shirt, grab your jewellery box... and let’s make a marriage made in fashion heaven.
Step 1: Select Your Outfit
It may seem like an obvious step, but it’s hugely important to plan your outfit. You’ll get so much more use out of your t-shirt if you pair it with another statement piece. What clothing have you been pairing your t-shirt with lately?
Sometimes, we find ourselves confined within fashion categories. One fashion rule that has recently been blown out of the water is the whole “jeans and a nice top” phenomenon. If you’re looking for a refreshing and stylish twist on the t-shirt look, then try pairing it with a patterned pair of flared trousers or a trendy midi skirt. Leopard print has risen in the fashion ranks recently, and it shows no sign of stepping down. Why not invest in a heavily patterned item that will elegantly contrast the plain t-shirt?
Step 2: Go Over The Top (… literally)
A statemented piece of jewellery really draws the eye. A pendant or two can elevate a simple t-shirt into an elegant outfit fit for any dressy occasion. However, you want to ensure that you don’t go too small with your chosen jewellery. There is nothing worse than an understated t-shirt paired with an understated piece of jewellery.
Take a look at these pieces below. They are big enough to be noticed, but not too overpowering for the basic t-shirt vibe. If you want to really test the waters, choose a piece of jewellery that is truly experimental and unique. It’s not hard to find this kind of rarity when handmade jewellery is concerned.
Step 3: Paint By Numbers (… not literally)
The colour of your jewellery should be dependant on the colour of your shirt. Gold and brightly coloured pieces tend to stand out more when they are offset by a white t-shirt. Alternatively, darker coloured t-shirts are great when paired with lighter silver jewellery items.
Look at these images below. You can really tell the difference. The brighter pendant is so much more visible with the dark navy backdrop.

Step 4: Put Together A Flat-Lay
There are two reasons to do this. Firstly, you can gauge whether your outfit works together as a whole without having to try the whole thing on. This will save you time in the morning. Pre-planned outfits and jewellery accessories are a MUST.
Secondly, it would be a great addition to your Instagram feed. Social media is your go-to place for outfit advice nowadays. Why not throw it out to your followers to help you decide? And if it doesn’t get the likes? Then who cares. If you like it, that’s all that matters.
