Buying your partner a ring can be a stressful effort. You head online to find the perfect one, add it to your basket, and pause at the checkout. It dawns on you that you don’t know your partner’s ring size, and this is a pretty important piece of information to know. This begs the question… how do you find out your partner’s ring size without spoiling the surprise?
What if you have planned an extravagant wedding proposal, but the ring doesn’t fit? I can’t think of anything worse. Forget the fact that she won’t be able to wear it immediately to proudly show off her engagement, she also won’t be able to take the iconic engagement picture.
Take a look at our top 5 tips for finding out your partner’s ring size without making it obvious! We’re aiming for subtlety here, so don’t whack out a tape measure whenever she’s around… this may give it away.
1. Casually broach the subject
Take your time. If you are overcome with excitement, your partner will feel your energy and suspect something. You have as much time as you need, so try to broach the subject in a subtle way at least 2 months before you plan to propose. By the time you end up proposing, she will have forgotten about the conversation and will be none-the-wiser. This will only be successful if you make the comment in passing and don't make it obvious.
Alternatively, your partner may want to be involved in the engagement ring choosing process. In this case, perhaps it is better to ask them outright whether they would want to choose their own ring or not. Some couples are incredibly straightforward and honest in all aspects of their relationships. Some people don't like surprises. If this is your partner, then it is probably better to put it past them first, and ask for the correct ring size.

2. Phone a friend
Your partner will most likely have a close circle of friends, and they probably know her ring size. In times of desperation, you have to make use of your contacts. Phone a friend, and let one of her BFFs help you out in your time of need.
If your partner's friends are unsure of her ring size you could always stage a covert plan. Ask the friends to plan a girl's night with your partner. During the evening, they should casually use their own rings as a prop to measure your partner's finger. They can pretend to try on each other's rings and can make a game out of it. The only risk with this idea is the number of people that will need to keep the secret. Try and ensure that only a few people remain keepers of this secret. You don't want anyone to accidentally expose your plans!

3. Draw an outline
It’s back to school with this technique I’m afraid, and you’ll have to get out the tracing paper and pencil. Wait for your partner to fall asleep or go out of the house. Once the coast is clear, grab your tools and head to her jewellery box. Take a ring from her collection. Make sure that she usually wears this ring on her index or ring finger. Take the ring and trace the inside of it onto your sheet of paper.
Once you are done tracing the shape, carefully put the ring back inside the jewellery box. You don't want anything to be out of place, so ensure that you leave everything just as you found it. You can use your tracing of the ring to ultimately work out your partner's ring size. See step 5 for more details...

4. Make an elaborate cover story
Pretend you’re buying a ring for your mum and don’t know what size to get her. This would work brilliantly if you're planning to propose close to your mother's birthday. Get your Tom Cruise acting skills on for this one, because this is probably the most risky plan of all. the logistics alone can be complex. You need a solid cover story, and you need to stick to it.
Ask your partner for advice on what ring to buy your mum. You can craft the conversation and act like you are unaware what ring size your mum is. This is a great Segway to ask your partner's ring size and innocently enquire whether it is similar to your mum's ring size or not.
