The lariat is the new statement necklace. It’s elegant and low-hanging design has been around for a while, but (thankfully) it’s evolved into something much more chic and minimal than the western-inspired versions of the early noughties. Sleek and modern, we share our styling tips for these barely-there chains. Here’s how to wear one in 2017.
Under or over?
It’s your choice. Wear them over tops for a more noticeable look or tucked under for something that’s slightly more discreet. We think they look best draped underneath a deep V neckline so you can’t see where the long single strand ends. It’s understated and alluring, and works well with a dainty and fine lariat design. Adding a delicate gold chain to an off-the-shoulder top will draw even more attention to your collarbone.
One of the reasons lariats have become so popular is because of their versatility. Worn alone or piled up with other pieces, lariats can make a variety of statements without requiring too much effort. Chokers are still ruling the necklace roost, so it’s only right that these two trends go hand-in-hand. Pair your lariat with a single choker on top or, if you want to make more of a statement, add multiple dainty necklaces of different lengths for a layered look.
The lower the better
In our eyes, the lower the neckline the better. Style them with a plain V-neck t-shirt and jeans for daytime, or a daring lowcut black dress for evening.
Spice up shirts
Amp up plain work shirts by adding a lariat underneath. You’ll only just see it poking through, making it subtle enough for the office.
Do a 180
Lariats are the perfect accessory to wear with low or open back tops. Simply wear your lariat in reverse so the long linear line of the lariat falls down the centre of your back. It’s an unexpected touch and one you can play around with - add a few different length chains to create a waterfall effect down your back. Shoulder blades have never looked so sexy!
