KARTÓ is a family-run fashion brand, created in 2000 by sisters, Susanne and Gitte Frank. In 2017, Susanne’s daughter Katrine joined the team and is the sole designer and creator behind KARTÓ Jewellery. Based in the heart of Copenhagen, Katrine handmakes fine feminine fashion jewellery, using precious metals and gemstones. Katrine finds inspiration from nature and the amazing patterns from her mum and aunt’s fabrics.
Her mother and aunt have a strong passion to make women happy through their exclusive sustainable clothes. This is something that Katrine has taken on board when designing and making her jewellery, ensuring that she uses organic and sustainable materials. Running a business didn’t seem like enough for Katrine - she is also studying for a BA in Jewellery, Technology & Business, while working on her brand. Katrine chats to us about how her mother has influenced her as a designer, being featured in British Vogue and the music she listens to while in the studio.
How did your brand begin?
Kartó is a family owned fashion company created in 2000 by my mum and aunt. In 2017, I joined the family business and created Kartó Jewellery. I have a big passion for jewels and beautiful gemstones and I’m now studying for a BA in Jewellery, Technology and Business.
Is there anyone in particular who has heavily influenced/guided you as a designer?
My mum has always been a big inspiration for me because she is different with an edge. She has made me push my boundaries and has definitely influenced me as a designer.
How is your jewellery made?
I design and hand make all of my jewels in the heart of Copenhagen. This is why every piece is unique, special and only a few are made of each design.
Are there any celebrities you would love to see wearing your designs?
I would love Emma Watson to wear my jewellery. I loved her in Harry Potter and she has grown into such a beautiful woman that fights for a better world. I would be honoured if she one day wore my jewellery.
How do you want someone to feel when they wear your jewellery?
I make fine, feminine and beautiful fashion jewellery that brightens up your outfit. I want women to feel strong, confident and stunning in a fashionable look, completed by my jewellery.
What has been the highest point of your career so far?
The highest point of my career so far is being featured for three months in British Vogue in their campaign about upcoming jewellery designers from around the world.
Are there any other designers whose work you particularly admire, and what jewellery is on your current wishlist?
I admire a lot of other designers like the Danish brand Ole Lynggaard but in particular, I love Pippa Small Jewelry. Her jewellery is amazing with the most beautiful gemstones and if I could, I would add all of her jewels on my wishlist.
What music do you play in the studio while you’re working?
At the moment I enjoy listening to Billie Eilish, Ed Sheeran and Lana Del Rey.
Winding down after a day in the studio is sometimes difficult for a designer. What do you do to help this process?
I go for a run by the sea with my dog, take a hot bath and drink a cup of hot water with honey and lemon. Then I feel relaxed and calm.
Favourite series to binge-watch on Netflix?
I love New girl at the moment but Friends is of course one of my favourites.
