Jewellery is translated into French as the word ‘joaillerie’ which is derived from the word ‘joie’ meaning joy. This profound expression is what encourages Swiss brand Roxalana to carve their fine jewellery designs on a daily basis; to see the joy on a person’s face when they wear their jewellery. Using precious and semi-precious gemstones, Roxalana create bold keepsakes centred around the beauty of a gemstone.
From striking opals and rubies to calmer citrines and tanzanites, all gemstones are set into meticulously sculpted golds for a truly opulent look. We speak to Roxalana about their belief that people do choose their jewellery, but how it is equally true that jewellery chooses its owner and it’s just a matter of time before they meet each other.
How did you get into the jewellery industry?
“I was very lucky to have the best of the best who helped me to get in the word of gems, and they still guide me in this industry in Geneva. It is here that I did my gemmology courses, then I travelled to India to discover the world of gems and old jewellery making, Hong-Kong for trading, Italy for production and, of course, Switzerland for its quality perfection.”
How do you source your gemstones?
“Stones always take time and sometimes I may end up finding them either during the expositions, fairs, very small stone traders or big gem companies. But honestly, I prefer to work with those traders who are so passionate that you pass by for 5 seconds to ask if they have a small tourmaline and you end up discovering their new treasures and hearing their incredible stories about every single stone for hours. I need to write a book about it one day.”

What is the most meaningful piece of jewellery you’ve received?
“That would be the gold earrings my grand-mom gave to me, unfortunately I can’t wear them as they are 14kt gold and I am allergic to everything under 18kt. My family even gave me the nickname of “golden girl” when I was younger because the pieces I could wear were more expensive! But I love those earrings and what they represent more than anything so I keep them in my jewellery box and enjoy now and then.”
What makes Roxalana jewellery unique?
“I strongly believe that the jewellery shall be beautiful inside and out, so every piece will be worked through from all sides, some details you even will see only when you take the jewellery off. My mentors support my desire to sometimes use big gems with inclusions. Some would say they are not perfect, but are we perfect ourselves? Every wrinkle on our face with time shows a story just like inclusions in stones, so don’t try to be perfect, try to be unique!”

How do you want someone to feel when they wear Roxalana jewellery?
“I would like them to feel that the chosen pieces of jewellery are part of them and that they help to express themselves: tassel collection for more playful mood, pearls for more romantic evenings and weddings, classic jewellery for any occasion etc.”
What drives you to continue creating new and exciting jewellery?
“I feel like there is a never-ending fountain of design ideas and I really love to be in the process of the creation. What drives me the most is to see the shining eyes of my clients when they see the jewellery for the first time in real life, and that they are enjoying it even years later.”
