INIZI is a Singapore-based brand of designer fine jewellery that appeals to modern, stylish women. We had a chat with her and found out all the answers to questions you would love to know.
'In much the same way, crafting a piece of jewellery involves mathematical calculations. Also, working with metals involves physics. And everything has to be come together aesthetically.'
How did your brand begin?
"I’ve always been in love with beautiful jewellery and although there is a vast range to choose from in the shops, it was difficult finding something that spoke to me. So, I decided to make my own. One thing led to another and, in April 2015, I incorporated Blackfrangipani Pte Ltd and started the INIZI brand."
When did you first fall in love with jewellery and knew you wanted to become a designer?
"I should say that I’ve always been in love with all things beautiful. I get excited with the aesthetics of things. For many years, I was designing publications. In a sense, the jewellery designing that I’m doing now is a logical extension of what I did with publications; just working with a different medium, so to speak. If there is a moment when it became clear to me that I wanted to become a jewellery designer, it has to be when I received a compliment from an old Japanese craft artisan in Tokyo for one of my earlier jewellery pieces."
What has been the highest and lowest point of your career so far?
"The highest point(s) of my career so far are the winning of the international category award in the Australian Pearl Jewellery Design Competition in September 2017; and being trend-spotted by a Paris design celebrity—two years in a row—when INIZI exhibited at Bijorhca Paris, a premier international jewellery trade show, in 2016 and 2015 .
The lowest point? There isn’t one, really. Perhaps not yet. I’ve been very busy since starting the company about two-and-a-half years ago and I have been blessed with the largely smooth sailing that I have had thus far."
Values are really important to us at Jewelstreet. What are your core brand values?
"We believe that our customers deserve the best—creative designs made with high-quality materials and gemstones. Each piece of jewellery is made by hand with meticulous care and effort. I have a very intimate relationship with each piece I create. I know each curve, each bend, each line that make up my jewellery pieces.
INIZI jewellery are made with passion and a lot of heart. If I won’t wear it, you won’t see it in our collection. Passion is the driving force that makes things possible. So, when a client buys a piece of INIZI jewellery, they’re buying the passion we have in making beautifully creative high-quality jewellery."
Where do you draw inspiration from for your designs?
"There’re so many things that inspire me. Whether I’m at home or when I’m travelling. Nature, textures, shapes and forms inspire me—even a droplet of water. I don’t go looking for inspiration but there’s always something that catches my eye, strikes my fancy and becomes my muse."
How is your jewellery made?
"All my jewellery pieces are hand-made at the bench. Because they are handcrafted, no two pieces will be exactly identical. INIZI customers love the fact that they are getting an “exclusive” creation in that the piece they wear is not entirely the same as another."
How do you want someone to feel when they wear your jewellery?
"Happy and confident; and that they’re wearing jewellery that express their mood and personality."
Can you recall a particular moment with a client that will stay with you forever?
"I have a client who used not to wear drop earrings. She just didn’t go for it. But when she saw one of my INIZI pieces, she was so taken she bought it; her very first pair of drop earrings. On a visit to her family back home, she wore her much-loved earrings to dinner. The ladies at the dinner table complimented her on her earrings. Her sister-in-law, in particular, couldn’t keep her eyes off them. She kept saying how beautiful they were and how much she loved them.
The client was very happy. But when her sister-in-law went on about the chalcedony drop earrings over the course of dinner, she was moved to take off her much-loved INIZI and present them as a gift. We think that was such a lovely thing to do. The client then ordered another pair of the drop earrings for herself."
If you could travel to one place in the world right now, where would it be and why?
"If I could fly away right now, it’ll be a flight to Rome. Then a train ride and a drive to Montissi in Tuscany. I used the little village as a base while exploring the neighbouring towns. I spent close to a month there and absolutely love it. The architecture, the history, the vistas, the people, the food, the wine … I could go on in detail."
What is your favourite quote?
"Be yourself; everyone else is taken. (Widely attributed to Oscar Wilde although this cannot be substantiated)"
What meal is your signature dish?
"Melanzane alla parmigiana."
Favourite series to binge-watch on Netflix?
"That’s elementary. BBC One’s Sherlock; without a doubt."
