Marketa of Booblinkajewellery is a Czech designer based in the beautiful Cornish countryside and is known for her ocean-inspired jewellery designs. Booblinka is the Czech word for ‘tiny bubble' as Marketa wanted to create a brand name that represented her Czech heritage and her love for the sea. Join us today as she tells us more about the inspiration behind her designs and the YouTube show she has taken part in.
How did your brand begin?
My brand began when I moved to Cornwall from the Czech Republic and fell in love with the beautiful coastline and the ocean. Here I found my first piece of sea glass and that unlocked my passion and inspired my creativity.
When did you first fall in love with designing and knew you wanted to become a designer?
When working in my previous job, a work colleague wore a set of very unusual rings. I discovered she had made them herself by taking a college evening course. I was so amazed that the same evening I applied for the same course and my journey began there.
Where do you draw inspiration from for your designs?
My inspiration comes from the Cornish coastline and the various colours of the ocean. Most of my pieces are both unusual and unique.
How are your products made?
My pieces are made with traditional silversmithing techniques. I also use lost-wax technique which is an ancient technique but still used in fine art.
Can you recall a particular moment with a client that will stay with you forever? Could be a funny horror story or a fond memory.
My fondest memory is of a lady who had lost her husband and who brought her wedding ring to me after it had been cut off in hospital. She asked me to incorporate her wedding ring into a bracelet, which I designed for her.
She was very moved to tears and told me I had created an heirloom piece of jewellery for her and she will pass it on to her children.
How do you want someone to feel when they wear/use your designs?
I want my clients to feel very special when they wear the pieces I have made. I hope that each time it is worn it brings back fond memories and moments in life. I hope they also feel beautiful and empowered.
Have you been featured in any exhibitions?
After enrolling in a silver diploma course with the London Jewellers Academy I was chosen to participate in a program called The Jewellers Retreat, which was to be debuted on YouTube. The three students selected had 3 days in which to complete 3 different jewellery projects under time constraints. The result was a three-part TV show packed full of inspiration, tips, tools, gemstones, soldering and much more. You can find the show on YouTube. Of course, I was immensely proud to have been given this opportunity.
What drew you to JewelStreet?
I received an unexpected email from JewelStreet offering me the opportunity to advertise and sell my jewellery through their website, which is packed with amazing handmade and handcrafted products from truly talented artists.
If you could only wear one piece from your collection, what would it be and why?
My favourite piece is a ring that is a part of my Mini Ocean Collection. The ring is made from a combination of sterling silver, 9ct gold, teardrop Swiss blue topaz and five moissanites. The ring is a kinetic piece and can be worn as a ring or a pendant on a chain.
The Mini Ocean Collection comprises of three rings which have been inspired by my early morning swims - the sunlight dancing on the water creating a brilliant shimmering reflection. The Swiss-blue topaz represents the most stunning shade of blue, the gold the sun and the tiny moissanites the extra glistening light of the water.
What is your favourite quote?
My favourite quote is “Diamonds are made under pressure but never forget they are not formed over night”.
