After a conversation with her Granny about the simple toys she used to play with as a young girl, Hazel Rose was inspired to create vibrant, colourful jewellery inspired by spinning tops. Designing pieces so they have interchangeable parts and can be easily played with, Hazel works with recycled silver and enamel to make her striking, geometric designs. We chat with Hazel about pushing boundaries, always wearing her pieces before putting them on the market and why she would rather be in Iceland right now.
How did Hazel Rose Jewellery begin?
“I studied at the School of Jewellery in Birmingham where I gained a BA Hons Degree in Jewellery and Silversmithing, Design for Industry. Originally, I was inspired by organic forms but I was never satisfied with the accuracy and finish of the pieces. This drove me to look for inspiration elsewhere. During the final year of my degree I started looking into the idea of fun playful jewellery which had interchangeable parts and could be moved and played with. Partly because I always fiddle and play with the jewellery I am wearing, and I thought this would be an unusual feature to include in my designs. Spinning tops became my main inspiration stemming from a conversation with my Granny about the few simple toys she enjoyed playing with as a child. Bright vibrant primary colours applied with cold enamel added to the feeling of youthfulness and enhanced and accentuated the geometric shapes.”
"I like the idea of jewellery with more than one purpose, hence my latest design 'Spin Within'."
What inspires your designs?
“Geometric forms are all around in the built environment and were my initial inspiration, along with my desire to play with my jewellery. This drew me to toys and a fun playful theme - in particular, spinning tops that could be spun. Areas of primary colour, often seen in children’s toys, gave me the idea of enamelling between the geometric shapes. These colourful patterns then changed and blurred as the top was spun, giving yet another dimension. I like the idea of jewellery with more than one purpose, hence my latest design ‘Spin Within’, a hinged spinning top locket which opens to reveal a revolving bead.”
What are your core brand values at Hazel Rose Jewellery?
“I am determined that my jewellery should have a strong identity that’s unique to me and my designs, and reflect my personality. My aim is to continually develop new creations and present the clients with new designs in order to engage their interest and their anticipation of the latest collection. The customer can choose a piece that will give them lasting enjoyment and pleasure, an object that is carefully hand finished, is beautifully presented and more than just an item of jewellery. At all times, I am committed to upholding the top quality of the brand and I always wear a new piece to decide how it feels and performs before putting it on the market.”

Are there any celebrities you would love to see wearing your jewellery?
“Tilda Swinton is someone I would love to see wearing my jewellery. I see her as a very flamboyant actress who enjoys wearing unusual clothes. I have also met her a few times and instantly liked her personality and feel that my jewellery would work well for her.”
If you could only wear one piece from your collection, what would it be and why?
“My favourite piece is the new locket ‘Spin Within’ because I like the bright colourful patterns and enjoy unclipping the top from its chain and spinning the form within.”
What music do you play in the studio whilst you're working?
“I enjoy listening to Radio 1 in my studio, as I find the upbeat music energising, which helps me to keep working and concentrate.”
"I like pushing boundaries with my designs by making them more detailed and complicated, and I find it invigorating tackling the technical challenges this involves." If you could travel to one place in the world right now, where would it be? “I would love to be in Iceland right now. It is such an inspiring place with amazing landscapes that are out of this world. It’s a place where you can switch off to the real world and have a proper holiday.” Where do you see yourself in 5 years? “Having expanded my business, I would like to own my own studio and retail outlet. I also plan on selling my collections internationally. I’ll be creating more intricate and kinetic jewellery in gold with precious gemstones. I like pushing boundaries with my designs by making them more detailed and complicated, and I find it invigorating tackling the technical challenges this involves.”
