Buddha to Buddha stands for the conversation from one Buddha to the other Buddha. A dialogue, a connection. Based in Amsterdam, we chat to the brand’s Head of Design, Lotte.
When did you fall in love with jewellery?
“I grew up in a small city in The Netherlands. When I was a little girl, I always looked at my grandmother’s jewellery collection. Every time I visited her I asked if I could take a look at her jewellery box and it gave me a magic feeling when she opened it. I always enjoyed making and creating things, and at the age of 15 I decided I wanted to go to a school for silversmiths or art school and become a designer.”
How did you become the Head of Design at Buddha to Buddha?
“I started designing jewellery collections on Artez product design, Art school. I made jewellery pieces during my internship at Alexander van Slobbe (a Dutch fashion designer). After focussing on fashion accessories at denim brand Diesel, my love for jewellery was too strong so I decided to focus on jewellery. I’ve been designing jewellery at Buddha to Buddha for almost 5 years now and I can really express my passion in working for this brand.”
"Craftsmanship, creativity, passion and quality. Quality is number one. No matter what.”
What are Buddha to Buddha’s key brand values?
“One of the key aspects here at Buddha to Buddha is that we embrace life in every aspect. To embrace life means two things: contemplation and celebration. We don’t tell you how to contemplate or how to celebrate. No, that is your own decision. But what we want to communicate is that Buddha to Buddha stands for more than just jewellery. It’s a lifestyle that embraces life with all its contradictions. No concessions. No compromises. 100% passion and pride. Craftsmanship, creativity, passion and quality. Quality is number one. No matter what.”
Where do you do your best design work?
“Walking around in cities, visiting flea markets and beautiful fashion stores. I love to see how people wear their jewellery and clothes. The jewellery we make at Buddha to Buddha is all designed in Amsterdam, but handmade by the finest silver smiths in the world.”
"It warms my heart every time I see people on the street wearing a Buddha to Buddha piece I’ve designed."
What has been the highest point of your career?
“It warms my heart every time I see people on the street wearing a Buddha to Buddha piece I’ve designed. I still find it really special to see an entire family (Mum, Dad, children) all wearing a Buddha to Buddha piece, which stands for the connection between them.”
How do want people to feel when they are wearing Buddha to Buddha jewellery?
“I want them to feel like they can express themselves, as if the piece of jewellery is a part of them. It should feel like a second skin. Everybody does this in their own individual way. That’s why Buddha to Buddha offers a wide range of jewellery. We are a unisex brand, with bold and fine pieces for both men and women. But every piece is recognisable as a Buddha to Buddha piece of jewellery.”
What does the future hold for Buddha to Buddha?
“I am proud of the company, always flexible and moving forward. Next year Buddha to Buddha celebrates the existence of 20 years and our goal is to expand internationally. We’re not there yet but we are very eager to grow more and more. And I am very proud to be a part of that.”
