Drawing on her innate creativity and her passion for jewels, Christy Jackson started up Verve Jewelry back in 2006. Based in California, Christy is a hugely talented artisan and handcrafts all her designs herself in her Long Beach studio.
From dainty lariats set with gemstones to simple drop earrings, her affordable, gold-plated designs have a subtle and organic beauty that makes them perfect for layering. Think modern but whimsical, edgy but earthy. We chat to Christy about the power of jewellery, why the 9-5 life isn’t for her, and her passion for supporting animal rescue efforts.
How did Verve Jewelry begin?
“As a kid, I used flowers and sticks to make jewellery. Then in high school I became obsessed with the local bead shop. In my twenties, I started to travel the world a lot and while doing so, came across so many amazing artisans - they inspired me start my own line.”
"I think my pieces are a mix of earthy and edgy."
What inspires your designs?
“Nature is my biggest inspiration. I love creating pieces that have a timeless, organic feel to them. I think my pieces are a mix of earthy and edgy. I’m also inspired by fashion of the past and like to incorporate vintage findings into my work.”
Have you always wanted to be a jewellery designer?
“As a little girl, I loved to hang out in my Grandma's room and try on all of her pieces. Her room inspired my love of jewellery. I’ve always been very creative, so my love of jewellery paired with my need to create was what set me on my path.”
"Giving back is so important. If more people donated time, energy and money into grassroots organisations, the world would be a much better place."
Do you work with any charities?
“I am a huge animal lover and a percentage of all sales go towards animal rescue efforts. Giving back is so important. If more people donated time, energy and money into grassroots organisations, the world would be a much better place.”
How is your jewellery made?
“I create all my pieces by hand in my Verve Studio in Long Beach, California. When I need to cast or plate something I use local Los Angeles craftsmen who do all of their work by hand as well.”
How do you want someone to feel when they wear a piece from Verve Jewelry?
“Jewellery is a pretty powerful adornment. It can help us feel closer to nature (when wearing natural stones and minerals), it's great for self-expression, it can remind us of some place or someone, and it can just feel good and make an outfit even better!”
"I’ve never wanted a regular 9-5 job and always knew that that wasn't going to be part of my destiny."
If you weren’t designing jewellery, what would you be doing?
“I would definitely still be doing something creative. I’ve never wanted a regular 9-5 job and always knew that that wasn't going to be part of my destiny. Being creative makes me happy and keeps me sane. I am basically doing my dream job.”
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?
“The best piece of advice I’ve ever been given is that when I am sad, frustrated or angry... go play! Especially outdoors. Getting out into nature, laughing and playing like kids puts things into perspective for me. It reminds me to be grateful.”
Are there any other jewellery designers whose work you’re loving at the moment?
“I have a bunch of jewellery designers that I am crushing hard on at the moment - Lauren Wolf, Joy Smith and Digby & Iona. There are plenty more too!”
