Lydie Woodberry’s passion for gemstones shines through in her gem-filled jewellery. Based in a quaint coastal town in Somerset, Lydie pairs ethically-sourced gemstones with simplistic, classic designs that don’t detract from the natural beauty of the stones. We chat with Lydie about the journey from receiving a jewellery kit as a Christmas gift to creating her own brand, HarmonyKreations.
How did your brand begin?
“Seven years ago, I was given a small jewellery kit as a Christmas present. It was fate, as I haven’t left it alone since designing pieces for friends and family or commissions. I well and truly caught the ‘jewellery bug’ and I needed to create more and more - each piece being better than the previous one. I had found myself!”
How would you describe your jewellery?
“My pieces are classical in their simplicity but they each have a twist. I love the feel of genuine gemstones, whether they are precious, semi-precious or organic. Sterling silver is soft and easy to work with; I love combining it to my gems.”
What inspires your designs?
“Leaving in the heart of Exmoor, where hills and seaside cross each other, I find my inspiration in the natural beauty which we take for granted. Colours change but remain in harmony with each other, giving a sense of drama that catches the eye.”
How do you source your materials?
“I’ve used the same supplier for all my genuine gems and sterling silver for the last 7 years. They travel to the particular countries and work with the communities to extract gems, so I know that my materials are ethically sourced and mined.”
Tell us about one of your most inspiring clients…
“One of my American clients asked me to make her a Lariat necklace with Columbian emeralds and sterling silver. The combination was in perfect harmony. It was so rewarding when she first saw a few pictures and when she was over the moon with the results.”
Are there any celebrities you would love to see wearing your jewellery?
“I would love to see little Princess Charlotte wearing my floating heart necklace. High in simplicity and in sentiment.”
If you could to travel to one place in the world right now, where would it be?
“If I could travel to one place, it would be Tahiti in the French Polynesia in order to discover a black lipped oyster and find this awesome black pearl that is being cherished by so many.”
Are there any designers who you admire?
“I admire a designer called Linda. She’s not famous and simply makes jewellery as a hobby. She loves needle-work and uses it with her Shibory silk. My goal is to make a piece of jewellery using silk.”
What music do you have playing in your studio?
“I love to listen to Collabro, a group who combine classic to contemporary.”
What’s your favourite quote?
"Quand on veut, on peut" meaning “when one wants, one can”. If you have a goal in life, just go for it.”
Which 3 famous people, dead or alive, would you invite to your dream dinner party?
“I would invite Empress Elizabeth of Austria and Queen of Hungary, Romy Schneider who played her in the 1955 film Sissi, and Princess Diana. All for their simplicity, humanity and natural beauty.”
