In her 40-year career as a jewellery designer, Penny Preville has learned a thing or two about what women want, especially when it comes to gold, diamonds and precious gemstones.
She began by making jewellery for her family and friends in the early 1970s, using her degree in fine art to create something unique for each individual. By 1975, Penny and her husband established the Penny Preville brand in New York City – officially the first step in a fantastic bejewelled journey. “What started out as a hobby turned into a business when Bloomingdales bought and successfully sold my debut collection,” Penny explains. “Word started to spread about my designs and I went on to win the 1978 Jewelers of America New Designer of the Year Award. I always had big dreams, but never thought that 40 years later I’d have an international brand sold in countless retail stores across the globe!”
Penny’s jewellery has always been inspired by women, their daily routines and busy lifestyles. She says: “I thrive on designing pieces that can be worn every day, from day into evening, as well as pieces that can express a woman’s individuality.” Her collections are also driven by jewellery designs from world cultures, taking into account the nature, architecture, art and history of places across the globe. She muses, “The historical influences on my collections span from Imperial Russia to Byzantine, Raj to Art Deco. I study past and present cultures and ancient civilisations, along with nature, the arts and fashion. I romance these elements, making them feel fresh for a contemporary woman.”
Penny’s love of jewellery is also part of a larger story, starting with her grandmother whose collection of Cartier, Tiffany and Van Cleef & Arpels jewels provided an initial spark of interest. “My original inspirations were my mother and grandmother,” Penny remarks. “My mother was an artist, an interior designer and an antique dealer. My grandmother painted Art Nouveau motifs on Limoges porcelain. Art and creativity surrounded me as a child.”
Romance, elegance and understated sophistication are just some of the words that can be used to describe the Penny Preville brand aesthetic. Penny explains, “My designs are feminine and luxurious with great attention to detail and craftsmanship that makes my jewellery truly timeless. Each piece I design reflects my own inspiration and sensibility. I put my heart and soul into every piece we make.”
“When my son decided to propose to his girlfriend, I designed her engagement ring. That’s one of the things I cherish most about what I do."
Penny’s heart and soul is particularly apparent in her best-selling ‘Mara’ ring, which was initially designed for her daughter-in-law. “When my son decided to propose to his girlfriend, I designed her engagement ring. That’s one of the things I cherish most about what I do. I love designing for friends and family and being a part of their story.” She’s also excited about her new 18ct gold and diamond Secret Garden collection, including bracelets, earrings, rings and necklaces with a flower petal motif, as well as pieces with diamond leaves that wrap sinuously around the body.
She concludes, “To me, jewellery is the ultimate expression of love. It expresses a womans personality and has a sentimental value like no other luxury item.” We couldn’t agree more.
