Mantra Jewellery was founded by Jo Stroud in 2016. She wanted to forge together the power of words with the intrinsic beauty of jewellery. The aim? To fulfil its wearer’s style and soul. Jo recognised a need for this kind of personal, precious and portable jewellery within the industry. Each handmade piece carries a powerful message.
At the heart of every design is an uplifting positivity. When you order an item from Mantra Jewellery you are not only receiving jewellery… you are gaining a new perspective on life. You are growing as an individual, and you are recognising your own worth.
Wellbeing and mindfulness are central values for Mantra Jewellery. But what goes on behind the scenes? What is the mantra that Jo herself lives by? Join us as we sit down with Jo and get a sneak peak behind a successful jewellery brand.
How did your brand begin?
Mantra is jewellery which changes the way you feel. It combines the power of words with the beauty of jewellery. I am very inspired by words.
Each piece symbolises a positive mantra. Repeat the mantra to yourself to change your mood and mindset.
Values are really important to us at JewelStreet. What are your core brand values?
As a brand, we aim to be caring and encouraging. We are responsible, genuine and purposeful. And we want our jewellery to inspire and uplift our wearers. We also aim to always actively give back, with our 'Mantra Changes Lives' initiative.
Where do you get inspiration for your designs?
We always start with the mantra - the words - and then design a piece which brings that message to life. The mantra is the most important thing for us, so we ask our customers and talk to people all the time, to see what messages they need.
How do you ensure your jewellery is ethical and sustainable?
Our jewellery is made in Thailand, home of brilliant craftsmanship and Silver mines. We use a small, family-owned manufacturer. Our packaging is FSC-certified and part-recycled, and we off-set our paper use planting trees through Trees for Cities.
Can you recall a particular moment with a client that will stay with you forever? Could be a funny horror story or a fond memory.
When Suzy Walker, editor of Psychologies magazine, told me how she feels wearing her Mantra necklace.
She said it feels like a daily reminder of your commitment to yourself, when you wear it against your skin. That was a lovely moment.
How do you want someone to feel when they wear your jewellery?
I want them to feel inspired, motivated and encouraged. I want a piece of Mantra Jewellery to make them feel like they are their own life coach, with a personal reminder against their skin to prompt them to change their mood and mindset.
If you could only wear one piece from your collection, what would it be and why?
It would be one of our myMantra necklaces, which are personalised with your own mantra. I would wear the Silver Lotus Necklace, with 'Change my thoughts, change my world' engraved - to remind me that we can influence our experience of the world by how we think.
Do you work with any charities?
Our 'Mantra Changes Lives' initiative helps raise funds and awareness for charities we feel are doing an amazing job in areas we feel passionate about. We have collaborations in place with MIND, Bullying UK, Care International and more.
What's the best piece of advice you've been given? (And have you actually used it?)
To ask for help. It's easy in business to fall into the trap of thinking you should know all the answers yourself, and create every solution yourself. Many others have gone down the road before you and can help you on your way. Just ask. I do now.
How do you ensure you’ve got a good work/life balance?
Running, yoga and hill walking give me the physical break I need from working, while art is my passion. Visiting exhibitions of painters I love absolutely fills my soul with joy. But honestly - running Mantra doesn't feel like work!
What's your favourite quote?
I have so many. But 'Go confidently in the direction of your dreams. Live the life you have imagined' - H D Thoreau - inspires me every time.
