Meet adventurous jewelry brand: Peak Jewellery

Posted on

As a lover of adventure and the great outdoors, Michelle Sawbridge wanted to create a brand that combined her passion for jewelry and her pure adoration of nature. Peak Jewellery is inspired by the mountains and landscapes she has explored. She uses these natural wonders to guide the shape and textures of her organic silver designs. Powerful, untamed and designed for those who seek adventure; we chat to Michelle to learn more about her designs.

How did you start your brand?

“After completing a three-year traditional Goldsmithing apprenticeship and a further three years in the jewelry industry, I felt it was time to spread my wings and start my own business. Peak Jewellery started in my garden workshop, combining my love of jewelry and the great outdoors.”

What are your core brand values?

“Two values at the core of Peak Jewellery are quality of craftsmanship and to have as little impact on the environment as possible. I pour my heart and soul into every piece I make. I want to create something that will last and be treasured.”

Where do you get inspiration for your designs?

“‘Jewelry inspired by adventure’ is my tag line. Each piece has a story behind it, from glacier hiking, snowboarding and caving. The landscapes and mountains I’ve explored are the inspiration behind the tactile shapes and textures of each piece.”

How is your jewelry made?

“Each individual range differs greatly. I hand carve the Glacier collection to create strong and natural flowing forms, whereas my ‘Love The’ collection is focused on intricate welding to create simple and strong shapes.”

Are there any celebrities you would love to see wearing your designs?

“I would love to see any mountains lovers, amazing explorers and extreme sports athletes wearing my jewelry, such as Melissa Arnot, Jenny Jones and Travis Rice. They all love the mountains and have experienced them at their most extreme!”

"Jewelry is so personal, I would just hope the wearer feels very special each time they put it on."

How do you want someone to feel when they wear your jewelry?

“For people drawn to my jewelry that have a love of nature, I would wish the shapes recall a memory that they would be able to treasure and re live. Jewelry is so personal, I would just hope the wearer feels very special each time they put it on.”

If you weren’t designing jewelry, what would you be doing?

“I fell in love with jewelry without even realising it! It just so happens that this is the path I have taken. If it wasn’t jewelry I may have taken up a career in nature, teaching or being a guide. If money was no object, a ranch in Colorado!”

Are there any other designers you particularly admire?

“I am in awe of historical Egyptian gold jewelry, I love seeing what they produced without the aid of modern tools. If I could have any piece of jewelry it would be anything from Van Cleef and Arpels ‘Le Secret’ collection. Expensive taste!”

What music do you have playing in your studio?

“I mainly listen to podcasts; working alone, it feels like my version of office gossip. I love ‘Stuff you should know’ and ‘No such thing as a fish’. However, because I am concentrating, I forget all the facts I have learnt by the end of the day!”

"A huge mug of tea never fails to help."

How do you wind down after a long day?

“I find being active after an intense day in the workshop gives me a great refresh. Taking my dog out for a hike, or horse riding brings me so much joy when it is difficult to have a work / life balance. A huge mug of tea never fails to help.”

Where do you see your brand in 5 years?

“I plan to continue expanding my collections, creating more diverse designs with unusual stones. Working towards a time when I can create a ‘Make your wedding bands workshop’, I would love to help couples create something so special for each other.”
