Prince Harry designed Meghan Markle’s engagement ring himself
7 years after Prince William and Kate Middleton announced their engagement, this week it was the turn of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle to tell the world about theirs.
But unlike Kate, who was inevitably going to receive Diana’s sapphire ring, we had no idea what ring Meghan was going to have placed on her forth finger.
From the moment she flashed it in front of the eagerly awaiting cameras at Kensington Palace, the beautiful diamond ring was going to go down in history. But not for it’s size, or it’s monetary value, but for the heart-warming meaning behind it.
In royal terms, the ring is relatively subtle. Much like the proposal itself, which saw Prince Harry get down on one knee whilst they were cooking roast chicken and having a cosy night in.
The band is yellow gold (Meghan’s favorite) and features a large solitaire diamond flanked by two smaller stones. Prince Harry didn’t go down the same route as his older brother by picking a family heirloom, instead he designed the ring himself.
He sourced the main stone from Botswana, the country Prince Harry whisked Meghan off to around 4 weeks into their courtship. Camping underneath the stars, it was the first time the pair felt truly by themselves and had the chance to get to know one another.
The two smaller diamonds either side are perhaps even more meaningful. They come from Princess Diana’s jewelry collection, and are Prince Harry’s way of making sure she’s “with us on this crazy journey together”. And Meghan also appreciates the significance of these stones: “Not being able to meet his mum, it’s so important to me to know that she’s a part of this with us”.
The ring is beautiful, inside and out. And proof that the meaning behind jewelry is so much more important that its monetary value.
Thinking of proposing? Or just want to dream about what ring you would want?
