5 minutes with beauty entrepreneur turned jewellery designer: Liz Earle

Posted on

Best known as an author, TV presenter and leading wellbeing and beauty entrepreneur, Liz Earle’s first Fairtrade jewellery collection is based on her long-term love for natural botanicals. Liz has always been passionate about ethical and sustainable practices, and her jewellery line is no different.

All her designs are 100% Fairtrade, handcrafted in Peru by artisan craftspeople using certified Fairtrade gold and silver. We chat to Liz about her love for antique auctions, the importance of sustainability and living on an organic farm in England’s West Country.

Why did you decide to start designing jewellery?

“I have always loved jewellery and I often go to antique auctions to pick up vintage finds and re-model them for myself. I especially love the Victorian and Art Nouveau era, when plants and flowers were a focus, so when I started to design my own pieces this is where I found so much of my own inspiration.”

What are your core brand values?

“Ethical and sustainable sourcing are core brand principles in everything I do, so finding out the provenance of my precious metals is fundamental. Fairtrade is the only organisation with a truly transparent audit trail, ensuring eco and fair practice.”

What inspires your designs?

“My passion for flowers and botanicals led me to create the Botany collection, using botanically accurate designs of my favourite species, each with their own meaning. There is Neroli for love, Ivy for strength and Wild Rose for friendship.”

How is your jewellery made?

“All my pieces are handmade by artisan craftspeople in Peru using 100% certified Fairtrade gold and silver. I am unusual in using 100% Fairtrade sterling silver, thickly coated in 24kt rose and yellow gold vermeil.”

"My designs are created with love from materials fairly mined and fairly made."

How do you want someone to feel when they wear Liz Earle jewellery?

“My designs are created with love from materials fairly mined and fairly made. They are based on beautiful botanicals that uplift and inspire, so I would hope the wearer feels a sense of love and beauty whenever a piece is worn so close to the skin.”

How do you ensure all your designs are ethical and sustainable?

“All my pieces are hallmarked and certified as being 100% Fairtrade, as well as being independently assessed and hallmarked by the London assay office for metal quality. I also have my own unique Liz Earle 'LE' designer hallmark too.”

What’s been the high point of your career as a jewellery designer so far?

“Winning the award for Best Emerging Jewellery Designer after launching my collection by the Company of Master Jewellers was an incredible industry accolade - and one that is hard to beat!”

"At the end of the day I like nothing better than to gather my dogs and walk out across the open fields."

Do you work with any charities?

“The Fairtrade Foundation is a registered charity and puts back so much into the environment, workers' welfare and rights, ethical sourcing and sustainability. I am proud to be a small part of this organisation to help support their incredible work.”

How do you wind down after a long day?

“I live on an organic farm in England's West Country so I'm surrounded by the beauty of nature and the changing landscape each season brings. At the end of the day I like nothing better than to gather my dogs and walk out across the open fields.”

What drew you to JewelStreet?

“I love the way JewelStreet is able to showcase so many wonderful designs from around the globe - and gives easy access to so much choice. It's a wonderful family to now be a part of!”
