5 minutes with Californian jewellery brand: Enamorata

Posted on

From the age of 5, Surita Ghosh knew she wanted to be an artist when she grew up. But her journey took her on a very different path, one of human and civil rights, social justice and federal law. After graduating from university, Surita worked on a once-in-a-lifetime capital punishment case for the Office of the Federal Public Defender.

While the experience was priceless, she found herself sketching and painting in the evening to escape the heart-rending gravity of the case. She switched gears and moved to investment banking, but after a year and a half of sleep deprivation, it was her best friend who noticed how unhappy she was and encouraged her to pursue her dream of making jewellery.  We chat with Surita about her journey and her beautifully intricate jewellery designs.

What are your core brand values?

“Each and every one of my designs is created with the intent to help its wearer find their light. We also support our local craftsmen who take great pride in creating wearable art.”

How did Enamorata begin?

“I’ve always wanted to be an artist, but I started out on a very different path. I was working in law and then in investment banking, both very demanding careers. My best friend saw just how miserable I was and encouraged me to take a leap of faith and pursue my dream of making jewellery. So, in 2001, Enamorata was born!”

How do you want someone to feel when they wear Enamorato jewellery?

“Confident. And hopeful. I hope my jewellery can serve as an amulet. Not to give them faith from an outside source, but instead to find their own inner beacon of light.”

Where do you source inspiration for your designs?

“Inspiration comes from the emotional aspect of life. My designs are my catharsis. I try and translate the experiences that we all go through into my jewellery.”

If you weren’t designing jewellery, what would you be doing?

“A Supreme Court Justice, because I’m really passionate about civil rights.  Or, if not that, I'd like to work at a foundation that promotes quality education for every child.”

What the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?

“Follow your heart and your passion. Believe in the power of your dreams.”

What music do you have playing in your studio?

“I always listen to Prince for inspiration, he was undeniably gifted. I listen to Stevie Nicks for her mysticism, and Jimi Hendrix and David Garrett for their passion that makes the strings sing.”

What’s your favourite quote?

"As far as we can discern, the sole purpose of human existence is to kindle a light in the darkness of mere being." - Carl Jung

Which 3 figures (dead or alive) would you have at your dream dinner party?

“Walt Disney, because he created a fantasy land but taught us morals. Clarence Darrow, for his commitment to social justice. Plus, the Dalai Lama for his compassion and spirituality.”

What’s your signature dish?

“I have different signature dishes for different seasons. In spring, I like to cook pecan crusted salmon with asparagus. In summer, it’s scallop tacos. Then in fall I always make butternut squash lasagne and in winter it tends to be either Chicken Korma or Raan.”
