5 minutes with Found Jewellery

Posted on

Previously an industrial designer, Juliet Ramson started making jewelry using recycled timbers and brass. Today, Juliet works with artisan finishers who help bring her new and original designs into the jewelry world. Heavily inspired by architecture, her distinctly geometric collection aims to be unique in a world of generic designs. We chat with Juliet about the story behind her brand.

How did you start your brand?

“I started Found Jewellery in 2011 after I started using recycled timbers and brass that I’d found by giving them a new lease of life in contemporary jewelry. The brand has evolved from found materials to contemporary manufacturing and use of precious metals.”

What inspired your designs?

“I have an obsession for good design in architecture and lighting. A major influence on my work has to be Carlo Scarpa's architecture. I also feel very connected with the natural world and these two influences often combine in my jewelry.”

How do you want someone to feel when they wear your jewelry?

“I want my customers to wear the stories that are entwined deeply in my work, feel the influence of my beautiful New Zealand surroundings and appreciate the local hands that finish each piece. Mostly, I want them to feel unique in a sea of the same.”

Where’s your go-to meeting spot?

“My cosy design office is where I meet with my finishers, amongst the geothermal wonders of my local town Rotorua. Either there or I often call into the home workshops of my finishers to oversee progress on my designs.”

How do you keep a good work/life balance?

“Living rurally and having young children means that having a good balance between work and life is really important to me. I leave my work in town and head home to where there’s minimal cell phone coverage, a beautiful lake to go boating on and beautiful natural bush walks. It's a bit of a dream really!”

How do you wind down after a long day?

“Winding down from the buzz of designing is definitely very tricky for someone as passionate as myself. My half hour drive home helps and then I usually spend time with my kids and avoid picking up my laptop until after they are in bed.”

What are your plans for the future?

“Found Jewellery is in a great space for growth at the moment. I see myself as the designer merging with our artisan finishers into a joint studio with more in-house technologies. Our vision is to attract more physical boutiques around New Zealand and abroad.”
