5 minutes with Irish jewelry designer: Ger Breslin

Posted on

Since her first step into a metalwork class as a teenager, Geraldine Breslin has been passionate about creating jewelry. After several years working for other jewelry brands, Ger felt it was the right time to launch her own line of contemporary jewelry. Working out of her studio in Dublin, Ger prides herself on keeping precious metals in their natural state (no plating) and using unique, hand cut gemstones. We spent 5 minutes with Ger to learn more about her designs.

How did you start your brand?

“It started a long time ago! I think the seed had planted itself while I was doing metalwork in school. The boys would be messing about and I (being the only girl) would be making earrings out of scrap pieces of metal! It was years later, after working for other jewelry designers, that I started my own brand.”

Can you remember when you fell in love with jewellery?

“I remember collecting shells as a teen and plaiting thread, so I could wear them. I began adding beads, then started making beads and eventually adding shapes I cut from metal. It was a great way to relax and take a break from school and exam study!”

What inspires your designs?

“My name “Geraldine” means “Spear Bearer”, so it’s from this that I get inspiration. The spear bearer is strength, grace, beauty, confidence. I try to show these traits through my pieces. This image coupled with my life experiences is where everything comes from.”

“When using metals, I keep them in their natural state. I don’t plate or coat them in other metal.”

How do you make your jewelry?

“When using metals, I keep them in their natural state. I don’t plate or coat them in other metal. Unique hand cut stones also feature a lot in my work. As much as I can, I want my pieces to offer a client the chance to own something that's unique to them.”

How do you want people to feel when they wear your jewelry?

“I like to create jewelry that gives a sense of protection but also makes you feel confident that you can handle whatever comes your way. Beautiful adorning armour so to speak. The rings I wear have moments attached to them, they help me be more me.”

What’s been the highest and lowest point of your career so far?

“The highest point was winning Jewellery Designer Of The Year in the Irish Fashion Innovation Awards. Being chosen from your peers gives a great sense of affirmation. The lowest point was losing my Mam to cancer 3 years ago. She was my biggest fan.”

If you weren’t designing jewelry, what would you be doing?

“If I wasn't a jewellery designer I would still be doing something creative. Before deciding to make jewelry, I was chef in Ireland's only 4 star Castle Hotel. I was being groomed for the top position but in the end I followed my heart and chose metal.”

What music do you have playing whilst you work?

“I LOVE music! I come from a musical family so it’s in my blood. I own a drum kit, but am not very good! I listen to most styles, but find that rock and blues (some indie) are what I like best. A bit of Fleetwood Mac or Martha Wainwright are good for design flow.”

What’s your favourite quote?

“‘She is delightfully chaotic; a beautiful mess. Loving her is a splendid adventure.’ Steve Maraboli. To me it says, be free, lose yourself, be imperfectly perfect.. I love it!”
