Lia Chahla’s jewellery captures the radiance and beauty of natural gemstones. Striking, textured and bursting with colour, Lia never cuts the stone to fit a design, instead she creates her designs to protect the stone. Think ethereal bangles accented with glistening druzy stones, pendants forged from vibrant turquoise and statement rings set with chunky amethyst.
Lia has always had a deep-rooted passion for gemstones, and it was after making jewellery as part of her Masters degree that she realised it was her true calling. She now works out of her London studio, handcrafting her unique designs alongside her talented young team. We chat with Lia about being inspired by beautiful colours within nature, respecting the natural form of gemstones and what she’s doing when she’s not creating jewellery.
When did you fall in love with gemstone jewellery?
“Gemstone jewellery has always caught my eye, but I could never find the perfect piece that made me feel like 'it was made just for me'. So, I decided to create my own jewellery that allowed me to express myself, and this is exactly how I want my customers to feel.”
How is your jewellery made?
“Our jewellery is made using passion and respect for the shape and form of natural stones. We weave the conducting power of sterling silver over each piece to protect their natural healing properties.”
How did your brand begin?
“Making jewellery has always been my hobby for me, I used to bring stones back as souvenirs from every country I visited and turn them into pieces of jewellery. My designs quickly became popular and it became clear that what I had created was much more than just a simple project. I had turned my passion into a career.”
"I used to bring stones back as souvenirs from every country I visited and turn them into pieces of jewellery."
Where do you get inspiration for your designs?
“I'm inspired by the beautiful colours of nature and the way they change from season to season. I’m also very attached to natural stones. I don't cut the stone to fit the design; I make the design to protect the stone.”
How do you want someone to feel when they wear Lia Chahla jewellery?
“My goal is to create jewellery that allows a woman to express herself. I want her to feel like that piece was made just for her. She should feel good, inspired and special - but above all, I want her to feel herself.”
"I don't cut the stone to fit the design; I make the design to protect the stone."
Where do you source your gemstones from?
“We source our gemstones from illustrious mines and mountains across the globe, from which only the finest stones are selected. Choosing from the richest colours and textures, each stone is then transformed into a unique piece of jewellery.”
If you could only wear one piece from your collection, which would it be?
“My favourite piece is the Midnight Druzy Ring. I love its strong texture and the healing properties that druzy stones possess. I always feel special when I wear this ring; it brings a sense of joy to my day.”
"Life's too short to wear boring jewellery."
“Sweet and sour chicken. I really enjoy making it and love the colours of the dish.”
Best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?
“On one of my flights I met a professor who noticed the ring I was wearing. He asked me about the ring and I told him how I designed it and where the stone was sourced from. He said it’s a story that I should tell with every piece I sell.”
"She loved her new necklace that I created for her, and promised to pass it on to her daughter."
Are there any bespoke commissions you are particularly proud of?
“A client once approached me with a gemstone necklace that she inherited from her grandmother. She wanted to turn it into a modern piece that she could wear every day. She loved her new necklace that I created for her, and promised to pass it on to her daughter.”
If you could travel to one place in the world right now, where would it be?
“Venice. I have loved this city from the first time I visited it. It’s so romantic and radiates passion from its canals and bridges. I love the colours of the houses and the city's rustic style. It is the city of art.”
What music plays whilst you’re working?
“We listen to music that adds to the positive energy that already surrounds our studio from the natural stones that are laying here and there. We always link our pieces to lyrics from a song, which brings out the laughter in our office.”
How do you wind down after a long day in the studio?
“My second passion is playing tennis. Whenever I have time, I head to the tennis court. Another way of relaxing is playing with my cat, Charlie. He loves to play in the garden and run after me.”
