Based in Los Angeles, Cynthia Bach is renowned for her remarkable sense of style and attention to detail. After becoming fascinated by her mother’s jewellery at an early age and collecting gemstones to put in her treasure chest, design has always been on the cards for Cynthia.
After receiving a fine arts degree, she has gone on to design for a long list of celebrities including Halle Berry, Samuel L. Jackson, Cate Blanchett, and Salma Hayek. Only the finest metals and rare and colourful gemstones are selected for the jewels that bear the Cynthia Bach Hallmark. We chat with Cynthia about her story.
What drove you to start your own brand?
“While pursuing my art degree, I became more and more focused on jewellery. I started to like some of my designs so much I began making them into actual jewels. Others liked my designs so I got even deeper into designing and manufacturing my pieces.”
How did you train as a jeweller?
“I took a college stone mounting project to a local jeweller for counselling and assistance. I apprenticed with him and then a few years later married him.”
"I became so mesmerized by the colours and sparkles of gemstones in my mother’s costume jewellery. I would take the stones out and fill my tiny treasure chest like a pirate."
When did you fall in love with jewellery?
“As a young girl, my father bought me a miniature treasure chest. I became so mesmerized by the colours and sparkles of gemstones in my mother’s costume jewellery. I would take the stones out and fill my tiny treasure chest like a pirate. I then would re-design her jewellery pieces in the hopes she couldn’t tell - but always could.”
How has your childhood influenced you as a designer?
“I grew up all over Europe and was profoundly affected by the ever-changing milieu that came from the frequent relocations of a military family. My father was an officer so we were frequently surrounded by elegantly attired members of society in a wide range of cultures and I was profoundly amazed and influenced by the myriad styles I encountered.”
"I’m proudest of Cate Blanchett and my encounter with her while she was getting dressed for an Oscar Ceremony. We sat on the floor together and tried on jewellery like little girls."
Are there any clients you are particularly proud of?
“I guess I’m proudest of Cate Blanchett and my encounter with her while she was getting dressed for an Oscar Ceremony. We sat on the floor together and tried on jewellery like little girls and she could not conceal her excitement and the pleasure my jewels brought her.”
Values are hugely important to us at JewelStreet. What are your core brand values?
“My preeminent values are style, integrity, and impact. My personal style is reflected in my jewellery designs. I refuse to compromise the integrity of my work, it must please me first. I am always positively affected by visuals that have a profound impact on me and make every effort to create visually impactful jewellery. Bland, never.”
How do you source your materials?
“I maintain a “green” approach when sourcing metals and gemstones and am ever conscious of the impact this sourcing has on our environment. A close network of trusted suppliers is always at my beck and call.”
Where do you find inspiration for your designs?
“I generally find morning light to enhance my working spirit. My inspirations usually come unexpectedly and at the most inopportune times, frequently when I’m about to drift off to sleep. They also manage to find me when I’m in a new or previously unknown environment.”
"I take a great personal pride in my creations, they are like my children and I truly enjoy watching them grow up and leave the nest."
How do you want someone to feel when wearing your jewellery?
“I simply want my clients to feel the same way I do when wearing my jewellery: confident, bold and radiant.”
What has been the highest point of your career as a designer so far?
“The biggest thrill was the inclusion of one of my favourite designs in the permanent collection of the Smithsonian Institute. It’s the platinum and diamond tiara I designed and it was worn by Salma Hayek at a White House event.”
What drives you to keep creating new and exciting designs?
“My enthusiasm has never flagged. I am always striving to achieve something new and constantly evolving state of the art. I am frequently surprised and amazed by ideas and inspirations that lead me in new directions, always exploring uncharted territory. I take a great personal pride in my creations, they are like my children and I truly enjoy watching them grow up and leave the nest.”
