5 minutes with men’s jewellery designer: Marcos de Andrade

Posted on

Marcos de Andrade is not just a jewellery designer, many people will know him as the men’s lifestyle and fashion blogger, Royal Fashionist. After years of living and breathing men’s fashion through his blog, Marcos decided he wanted to tackle the world of jewellery design.

Now a rising star in the field, Marcos’ designs are aimed at the modern man. Inspired by history, art and street style, his collection includes spiked bracelets, axe pendants and cool signet rings. We chat to Marcos about how his blog led to a career in jewellery, why Tom Ford is his style icon and being involved in the making of his jewellery from start to finish.

How did your brand begin?

“The brand was born really organically; the success of my blog led me to it. I always had followers asking me for accessories ideas and I could never find exactly what I wanted, so I decided to design my own pieces! The process was long, it took two years and a lot of sweat and tears, but it was all worth it. I'm very proud.”

"I always had followers asking me for accessories ideas and I could never find exactly what I wanted, so I decided to design my own pieces!"

When did you first fall in love with jewellery?

“I fell in love with fashion and jewellery during my teen years, but it was after my first trip to Italy in 2012 that I really got into it and decided to create my own designs. Italian men were a huge influence - I love how they dress and accessorise.”

What inspires your designs?

“I like history a lot and like to research art, especially from the times of the Greek Empire, so I get a lot of my inspiration from that. Also, when I travel I always find myself being inspired by all the different cultures and simply by people on the street.”

"When something comes to mind I immediately sketch it or write down the idea, and most of the time I begin to work on it right away."

How is your jewellery made?

“I am involved in the entire process, from start to finish. When something comes to mind I immediately sketch it or write down the idea, and most of the time I begin to work on it right away. I have a great team and very detail oriented craftsmen.”

Are there any celebrities you’d love to see wearing Marcos De Andrade jewellery?

“Absolutely! All of them would be great! But if I had to choose one it would be Tom Ford. He is a big inspiration for me. Kanye West as well. I love his music and his ability to create.”

If you could only wear one piece from your collection, what would it be and why?

“It would be my Helmet Cuff. It’s a strong piece that you can wear with everything. It always makes me feel stylish and powerful.”

If you weren’t designing jewellery, what would you be doing?

“I think I would be an interior decorator. I love décor! I am currently in the process of moving to Austin and I am having a lot of fun decorating my house there.”

“Style is power and self-expression. I want men to feel confident when they wear my designs.”

If you could travel to one place in the world right now, where would you go?

“London. I visited London once and loved it. It has everything I like: culture, good food, fashion, diversity, friendly people and it's a big enough city. I am looking forward to visiting soon.”

Are there any other designers whose work your particularly admire?

“As I mentioned earlier, I am a big fan of Tom Ford and for jewellery specifically, it is David Yurman for sure. All his rings are on my wish list!”

How do you want someone to feel when wearing your designs?

“Style is power and self-expression. I want men to feel confident when they wear my designs.”
