5 minutes with Naomi Davies Jewellery

Naomi Davies-Tonkin believes jewelry shouldn’t simply just be wearable, it should be a work of art. By embracing current fashion trends and pairing metal with contrasting textures such as leather, Naomi creates designs that make a subtle yet modern statement. All her jewelry is handcrafted by her in her South Devon workshop. We spoke with Naomi to find out more about her jewelry journey.

How did you start your brand?

“My brand began when I had a logo designed with my name as the selling point. It’s timeless in style and quality, and it’s reminiscent of some fashion giants!”

Who has been the biggest influence on you?

“My father has to be my biggest influence. He was a practising artist and head of an art college when I was growing up. His paintings, sculptures and prints filled our house. His canvases of colorful, abstract compositions adorned our walls.”

"Music and musical instruments have always been a huge source of inspiration for me."

What inspires your designs?

“Music and musical instruments have always been a huge source of inspiration for me. I’ve always been fascinated by the contrast of the pure circle shape, with long straight lines in tension, like in a guitar.”

How do you make your jewelry?

“I love the contrast of metal with more organic materials. I primarily use silver and gold, combining it with marble or leather, which I love because it’s so sensuous to feel. All pieces are handcrafted and use stamping to cut out the leather.”

Are there any celebrities you would like to see wearing your designs?

“Emily Ratajkowski! I would love to see her in one of my body chains! And perhaps Ed Sheeran, The Vamps or James Blunt to wear my Fretboard Ring.”

How do you want someone to feel when they’re wearing your design?

“When someone wears my jewelry, I want them to feel like a style icon: beautiful, elegant, unique, edgy, sensual and classy.”

"I wanted a statement piece that was sophisticated and elegant, but with a bit of a punky edge."

If you could only wear one piece from your collection, what would it be?

“The black Leather Squares Choker. I originally designed the piece as sheer indulgence for myself. I wanted a statement piece that was sophisticated and elegant, but with a bit of a punky edge.”

If you weren’t designing jewelry, what would you be doing?

“I was always going to do something within the arts. Had I not chosen to follow a degree in jewelry, I would have chosen to study sculpture or illustration. I am also a qualified teacher so perhaps an art teacher.”

Are there any designers you particularly admire?

“Historically, I have always admired the work of Alexander Calder - an artist who also made paintings and large mobiles. But in terms of contemporary commercial jewelry, I would love to have a spending spree on Jacquie Aiche jewelry!”

What music do you have playing in your studio?

“I mostly listen to Radio 1. Scott Mills and Chris Stark keep me smiling in the workshop most afternoons!”
