Based in North East Scotland, Poppy Jewellery create beautifully organic and natural gemstone jewellery inspired by the landscape of their Scottish surroundings. Founder and designer of the brand, Joanne Charlish has always had a passion for jewellery and after 10 years working as a graphic designer she decided it was time to combine her creative skills with her love for jewellery and start her own line.
Inspired by the colours of the sea, beach, coast and mountains, Joanne’s designs have an authentic and rugged quality accented with uncut gemstones such as aquamarine, moonstone, tanzanite and rose quartz. We chat with Joanne about how the Scottish countryside is reflected through her designs, her journey from graphic design to jewellery design, and her new collection based on natural elements.
When did you fall in love with jewellery?
“I’ve always loved jewellery and during my worldwide travels to Europe, the Middle East and Asia I came upon a wonderful variety of jewellery designs, which resulted in many happy purchases that I still treasure and wear today. I’ve been creative from a young age and having worked as a graphic design for the past 10 years it was perhaps inevitable that I would combine my creative designer skills with my love of jewellery. I feel so happy to be able to design and create unique jewellery for clients to enjoy.”
How has your childhood influenced you as a designer?
“I was fortunate to grow up on a small farm in Morayshire North East Scotland and was surrounded by nature and animals all my childhood with regular trips to the stunning local beaches at Findhorn and Roseisle. The sea and coastline have always been very special for me and continue to be my main inspiration for my jewellery designs and choice of gemstones used. I now live with my husband and two cocker spaniel dogs in Burghead, a small coastal village in the same area and walk by the coast and on the beach every day.”
"The sea and coastline have always been very special for me and continue to be my main inspiration"
What inspired you to create your own line of jewellery?
“It was never planned, it just kind of happened! Three or four years ago, I had been commissioning some personal rough gemstone jewellery pieces, which were stunning in both design and quality. This inspired me to create my own collection of natural organic rough cut gemstones set in sterling silver.”
Where do you find inspiration for your designs?
“The coast and sea of the Moray Firth Scotland where I live and work each day are my daily inspiration for the designs, colours and natural rough cut organic gemstones used in my jewellery. I am currently developing a new range of textured silver jewellery which will be based upon the natural elements I find and collect on the beach each day, including seaweed, razor clam shells, driftwood, mussel shells.”
"By using natural organic rough cut gemstones in most of my designs, no two pieces will ever be the same."
Values are really important us at Jewelstreet. What are your core brand values?
“By using natural organic rough cut gemstones in most of my designs, no two pieces will ever be the same. I feel our customers appreciate and search for unique, one-of-a-kind jewellery pieces. Our gemstones are carefully and expertly sourced, with the quality and finish being extremely important to me in every single piece of jewellery we create.”
How is your jewellery made?
“The organic rough cut gemstones are carefully and expertly sourced for me and all my designs are handcrafted by skilled artisans in a small family-run workshop in Jaipur.”
How do you want someone to feel when they wear your designs?
“I would like them to be happy, comfortable and know that they are wearing a truly natural unique piece of jewellery which will be admired by many.”
"I have so many ideas for new collections and look forward to launching and sharing these in the future!"
