As seen on screen: Iconic jewellery from iconic films

Posted on

From the 90s chokers in Clueless to the opulent jewels in The Great Gatsby, there are so many classic films featuring iconic jewellery. Who could forget the ruby necklace Richard Gere presented to Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman? Or the black diamond ring Mr Big gave to Carrie in Sex and the City? Here’s a round-up of our favourite jewellery from some of the most iconic films ever to grace the silver screen.

CLUELESS

This cult classic 90s teen rom-com has become one of the most heavily recited and referenced films in history, and not least for its fashion. Cher Horowitz is (and forever will be) a fashion icon. That matching yellow plaid set that her closet picked out for her? The red party dress? The white Calvin Klein slip? It’s all so, so good.

In any of Cher’s multiple shopping sprees she is seen carrying Tiffany’s signature little blue bag and the storefront acts as a backdrop at least once. She’s rarely seen without a dainty pair of drop earrings, a diamond bracelet or a cute choker. And who remembers when she took on a gothic look with a long cross necklace over that sheer black top? However, the overriding jewellery trend taken from the 1995 chick flick has to be the embellished chokers, from Cher’s cutesy flower designs to Amber’s crystal buckle - these designs would totally work today.

PRETTY WOMAN

We all know the scene. The one where Richard Gere snaps the jewellery box on Julia Roberts’ fingers just as she was reaching to grab the extravagant ruby and diamond necklace. But what many people don’t know about that memorable scene from the 1990 classic Pretty Woman is that it was intended as a prank. The whole scene was a practical joke put together by Gere and the staff, but it turned out to be so realistic and adorable that the director decided to keep it in the film.

The incredible ruby necklace is the finishing touch to Julia Roberts' makeover, and the image of her wearing it with that red dress is now iconic. Custom made by French jeweller Fred Joaillier, the necklace features 23 pear-cut rubies surrounded by diamonds, set in 18k white gold.

THE GREAT GATSBY

Based on F. Scott Fitzgerald’s 1925 classic novel, the film adaptation of The Great Gatsby is an explosion of extravagance, parities and incredible outfits. And it has some of the most breathtaking vintage costumes and jewellery.

Leonardo DiCaprio plays the ever-suave Gatsby whilst Carey Mulligan, takes on the role of Daisy. Throughout the film, Daisy is seen encrusted in Art Deco diamond and pearl jewellery that is definitive of the period. Lavish jewelled headpieces are paired with opulent pearl bracelets with adjoining ring designs. These pieces seen in the film were by none other than Tiffany & Co, from their Great Gatsby collection. Other big name jewellers such as Cartier also loaned their Art Deco jewellery for filming. The vintage-inspired designs are so intricate and yet so excessive, that it’s hard not to fall completely in love with them.

SEX AND THE CITY

Whilst this may not have turned out to be such a classic as the other films in our list, in terms of fashion, the Sex and the City movies inspired a generation. And in the final scene of Sex and the City 2, Mr. Big presented Carrie with a five-carat black diamond ring while uttering the words, “because you're not like anyone else.” It’s a bold and fashion-forward engagement ring, but fitted Sarah Jessica Parker’s character like an absolute dream.

Originally from Israel, NYC-based designer, Itay Malkin, anonymously submitted the designs to the production staff and after they were approved, he was the one who made said ring. Sarah Jessica Parker worked with him on the final design, setting the large black diamond in 18kt gold and finishing it with 80 pavé white diamonds.

TITANIC

Few people won’t know what the Heart of the Ocean is. When it hit screens in 1997, James Cameron’s Titanic became the blockbuster of a generation with Leo and Kate’s performances still touching hearts even today. The magnificent Heart of the Ocean blue diamond pendant was worn by Kate Winslet in her role as Rose. In the story, it was originally owned by Louis XVI and then cut into a heart shape after the French Revolution, before the wealthy son of a Pittsburgh steel tycoon purchased it for his fiancé a week before they sailed on the Titanic. The necklace was prominent in the iconic scene where Jack draws Rose and the final scene which shows Rose as an old woman dropping the necklace back into the ocean.

The necklace used in the film was merely a prop created by Asprey & Garrard. However, after the film’s success, the London-based jewellers were commissioned to make a real Heart of the Ocean, featuring a 170-carat sapphire enclosed by over 100 diamonds. The necklace was donated to Sotheby's auction house in Beverly Hills for an auction benefiting the Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fund and Southern California's Aid For AIDS. It sold for $1.4 million to an unidentified client and was worn by Celine Dion two nights later at the 1998 Academy Awards ceremony.
