At The Bench With Laura Adele Jewellery

Posted on

London-based graphic designer, Laura Adèle Vanderslott had always yearned to make her own art, so she took a leap of faith and created her brand, Laura Adèle Jewellery. Combining her love of beautiful objects and passion for making things with her own hands, Laura began creating jewelry that she hopes brings joy to the people who wear it.

Working with gold, gold plated and silver, Laura combines modern and traditional metalwork techniques to create her designs. She ensures her brand is ethical and sustainable by not keeping excess stock to cut down on waste. She only uses high quality materials and she sources her gemstones from trusted suppliers. Laura makes jewelry for the modern woman inspired by London style. It’s delicate - but not girly, and tiny - but tough.

How did your brand begin?

I have a background as a graphic designer but I’ve always had a yearning to make objects and to do something hands on. I have been making since 2012 but it’s just this year I created Laura Adèle Jewellery taking my own name.

When did you first fall in love with jewelry and knew you wanted to become a designer?

I started taking evening classes and completed a 2 year course 1 day a week. This gave me the opportunity to learn the craft at my own pace and find out what I was interested in creating.

Values are really important to us at JewelStreet. What are your core brand values?

Our core values are: Quality, Simplicity, Affordability and Handmade.

Made for the modern woman inspired by London style, we make jewelry that is delicate but not girly, tiny but tough! We aim to give high-end quality without the high-end mark-ups.

How is your jewelry made?

We hand make all the jewelry in my London home workshop supported by local specialists in Hatton garden. I’m really proud to be able to keep things local.

How do you ensure your jewelry is ethical and sustainable?

By producing mostly made to order and not keeping excess stock, we can ensure minimal waste. We source our gemstones from trusted suppliers and have close relationships with the independent specialists who help us create our pieces.

Tell us about some of your most inspiring clients, or bespoke commissions.

I love being able to give advice for presents such as birthdays or Christmas. It’s an honor to be able to share in their important moments and I still get excited to send someone a piece that has been engraved with a special date or message.

What has been the highest and lowest point of your career so far?

When you get feedback from your customers it’s a wonderful feeling. I think the hardest part is juggling the business. It takes a lot of time to promote your brand and do the admin side of things.

What's the best piece of advice you've been given? (And have you actually used it?)

Follow your own path and don’t compare yourself to others. I try to remember that every time I have self-doubt.

What meal is your signature dish?

I find cooking a way to wind down. I visit Italy quite often and love cooking Italian food. I like making a northern Italian dish called Pizzoccheri which is buckwheat pasta with soft cheese, cabbage and potato. It’s amazing comfort food!
