Behind the scenes: London designers at Christmas

Posted on

From their Christmas traditions to the most memorable Christmas gift they’ve ever received, we get to know three of our favourite London-based designers at Christmas time.

AUGUSTINE JEWELSAUGUSTINE JEWELS

What is your favourite thing about the festive period?

The decorations! You can never have too many Christmas sparkling things.

Do you have any Christmas traditions?

On Christmas Eve, we have all the children hang up a sock by the fire. We leave out a glass of milk and some shortbread. In the morning, the socks have been replaced by glittery stockings filled with presents and the milk and shortbread have been eaten. I still don’t know how that happens!

What is the most memorable Christmas gift you have ever received?

Some jewellery of course! A little diamond necklace from my husband...the perfect present for a lifetime of love.

What is your favourite Christmas memory?

Creeping down the stairs at about 2am when I was 8 - seeing all the lights glittering on the tree and reflecting off the presents.

Have you had any Christmas-related disasters?

Once I had 20 for lunch and because of the snow we had no turkey. The delivery man had to walk a mile in the snow to deliver it as no cars could get through! That was dedication.

What is it like being a jewellery designer in the lead up to Christmas?

How do you find time to squeeze in Christmas shopping? I have not done any Christmas shopping for my family yet! It will happen once we get our own orders out….

Do you have any resolutions for the new year?

Yes, I want to do an aquamarine ice collection. I’ll design it when we are skiing over New Years. It’s going to be gorgeous and so many people love aquamarine.

What is your favourite thing about the festive period?

So much catching up with friends and family and so many events to dress up for, sparkling jewels especially!

Do you have any Christmas traditions?

My mother is Dutch, and in The Netherlands, there is a super cute St Nicholas celebration (also known as Sinterklaas, he is the basis for Santa Claus) on December 5th where one of the traditions is to gift each other huge chocolate letters for your initial! I know it’s really for children but we still love it!

What is your favourite Christmas memory?

We always used to put a perfect shiny red ribbon on our family golden retriever and then watch her play with all the wrapping paper. I still miss that.

Have you had any Christmas-related disasters?

My attempt at a Yule log was a pretty epic failure which my family still bring up every Christmas - I have redeemed myself with my smoked salmon and dill pancake starter though; that always gets requested!

How will you be spending Christmas day this year?

It’s not just the day with us it’s everything with the family! Getting the tree, decorating with all our old favourite tree ornaments, cheesy tunes playing, planning the menus, Christmas Eve dinner and Midnight Mass, presents in the morning and a late Christmas lunch as well!

What is your favourite thing about the festive period?

It’s the atmosphere I like best about Christmas, the lights brightening up the city and I do love a mug of steaming mulled wine!

Do you have any Christmas traditions?

We’re quite traditional and we always go to church on Christmas Eve for Midnight Mass, it marks the beginning of Christmas for me.

What is the most memorable Christmas gift you have ever received?

It wasn’t actually mine, but my mother was given a box of adorable baby hedgehogs by my brother! They were for her garden, it was quite a surprise on Christmas Day!

What is your favourite Christmas memory?

It’s something we do most years, but it holds the fondest memories for me and that’s riding the Ratty Railway in the Lake District!

Have you had any Christmas-related disasters?

When I was a child my mother bought me a coat with a fur trim, but she didn’t wrap it and instead hung it on my door. I woke up and seeing the shape and fur trim thought that Santa was in my room, but he didn’t move or leave and I was petrified! I was so relieved when my mother came in on Christmas morning!

What is it like being a jewellery designer in the lead up to Christmas?

It’s a crazy busy time, our workshop is non-stop, but it’s very exciting!

When do you start playing Christmas songs in the shop?

We have Christmas music in our stores playing from the dates we have our Christmas parties at the beginning of December; they have a preference for Mariah Carey and sometimes will start playing it a little earlier if they’re feeling particularly festive.

How will you be spending Christmas day this year?

Christmas Day will be spent with my family, we’ll go to church, open presents together, have a family walk with our dog, Oscar and then, of course we’ll have a big traditional dinner together.
