Let’s get to know Ria and her brand a little better.
How did Ria Poynton Design begin?
As a designer maker, I have spent many years trying to establish my brand, being given the opportunity to take part in design space in 2009, a Birmingham based business programme for jewellers, it helped me create my business and brand that you see today, giving me the encouragement I needed.
When did you first fall in love with jewelry and knew you wanted to become a designer?
My love for jewelry has always been in the forefront of my mind from a very young age. I knew at the age of 11 it is what i wanted to do, playing with beads and teaching myself silver-smithing and the joy of creating a piece to be worn by family.
Where do you get inspiration for your designs?
I take inspiration from geometric forms, traditional design methodologies and existing objects, my wire-based work is modelled on highly complex traditional filigree pieces. I used modern technologies to help create functional and modern pieces.
How is your jewelry made?
All made by hand the collections use a multitude of different techniques that I have honed over the years. Combining these with modern day technologies, I am able to combine them to make my modern day functional and durable pieces.
Tell us about some of your most inspiring clients, or bespoke commissions.
Some of my most inspiring clients I work with are the people that turn their stories and ideas into pieces they wear. Engagement rings that are covered in their favourite cycle paths, the trees that represent the two of them, the mountain range they cycle on and the diamond the sun, truly unique.
Can you recall a particular moment with a client that will stay with you forever?
There are always moments that you remember, the strange moment when organising engagement rings but trying to meet in secret, it ended up looking strange, having to meet in the back of the garages so no one would see and passing secret notes.
Where is your go-to meeting spot?
As well as my own collection of work I do a lot of commissions, there are so many different occasions to meet people that I tend to head to the coffee shop, a feel safe for both the parties, somewhere we both can feel comfortable.
If you hadn't become a designer, what would you be doing?
If I had not become a jewelry designer, my path may be very different, interested in sport I would have followed that but due to injuries I had no choice but to refocused, originally trained in three-dimensional design I later retained to be a jeweller.
If you could travel to one place in the world right now, where would it be and why?
There are so many different places that i would love to travel to at present; abroad to vietnam or at home to cornwall. Having originally studied in devon, the south holds a special place in my heart and a calming and relaxing feeling for the soul.
Do you have any exciting future plans and where do you see your brand in 5 years?
In the next 5 years I hope to have my own gallery with my husband, it is something both of us have dreamed of for years. An aspiration that again has been in the background for some time to help expand my brand and business.
