Based in Los Angeles, Azalea Lee is a crystal healer and has been a spiritual seeker her whole life. She launched her own line of metaphysical fine jewellery after struggling to find any that met the design or quality she was seeking.
As Above So Below designs are created with conscious love and are intended to assist the wearer in gaining greater happiness and fulfillment. Each talisman is made with careful attention to the metaphysical properties of the stone within the jewellery’s design. Azalea is devoted to using ethically-sourced or recycled metals and Fair Trade materials in her one-off, one-of-a-kind gemstone heirloom pieces.
Her collection is distinctly unique and minimalist, featuring an array of unheated custom-cut gemstones. We chat with Azalea about her journey to becoming a designer, her fascinating connection with gemstones and why she wants to create meaningful jewellery for others.
What first led you to jewellery design?
“I was looking for metaphysical fine jewellery to wear myself but was unable to find anything that was to my taste or the quality I was seeking. It was only after I had gone digging for my own gemstones that I met custom gem stone cutter, Jean-Noel Soni. When I first saw his work, I realized why previous fine jewellery and gems had seemed so lacklustre to me. There was an aliveness and radiance that came out because of the way he so consciously and carefully cut the stones. I was completely stunned. For someone who had been unimpressed with gemstones and had not even worn my engagement ring, I suddenly began snapping up gems from Jean. He cut the rough gemstone I had dug up with my husband and with that and other gems from him, I began finally making jewellery that was deeply meaningful and symbolic to me.”
Why did you start your own jewellery line?
“After making a few pieces for myself, I realised I wanted to make this kind of deeply meaningful jewellery for others. I was uninterested in finding out the metaphysical properties of stones by reading about them in some book; that was too "for the Bible told me so." I wanted to see if I could perhaps connect to the metaphysical properties of the stones first hand and so began earnestly studying crystal healing.
"It was as if someone handed me a guitar and I immediately knew how to shred. I was completely stunned because I had finally found my true calling."
In my first days of training in crystal healing that I realised how deep my connection to crystals and stones were. I instantly knew how to work with them. It was as if someone handed me a guitar and I immediately knew how to shred. I was completely stunned because I had finally found my true calling by learning how to facilitate crystal healing sessions. Bringing deep emotional and spiritual healing to people still continues to be deeply fulfilling. So in a roundabout way, I returned to my desire to create a personal and meaningful jewellery line, but with a more profound understanding of how gemstones could be metaphysically used to support the wearer."
How do you responsibly source your materials?
“My jewellery line is not only meant to be metaphysically supportive to the wearer, but also materially supportive for all the communities involved with making the jewellery a reality. I use Fairmined, certified, ethical gold and silver when possible and recycled metals otherwise. I do my utmost to source gemstones that are traded fairly.”
"It’s actually the stones and crystals themselves that often tell me what kind of design they would like to be placed in and why. The material literally speaks to me!"
Where do you source inspiration for your designs?
“As a crystal healer I work with the stones on a metaphysical level and actively communicate with them. It’s actually the stones and crystals themselves that often tell me what kind of design they would like to be placed in and why. The material literally speaks to me! I’m also inspired by my clients and what challenges they face that could be supported by the crystals in the jewellery. I often see common themes affecting them and design pieces with the intent that the jewellery will support them through their lives.”
How do you want people to feel when they’re wearing your designs?
“I want people to feel empowered when they wear my jewellery. I intend for every piece of my jewellery to be meaningful to the wearer and deeply personal to them. I want people to feel that each piece is their own personal cheerleader to help find greater happiness and fulfilment in their life.”
