Meet London jewellery designer Georgina Boyce

Posted on

Starting out in one of London’s most established independent designers, Georgina Boyce has been producing British-made commission pieces for clients since launching her eponymous label in 2014.

Recently launching Geo, her debut ready-to-wear collection, at London Fashion Week, we chat with Georgina about her hectic globe-trotting life, the inspiration behind the collection and why she eats, sleeps and breathes jewellery.

When did you fall in love with jewellery?

“I’ve coveted jewellery for as long as I can remember and always enjoyed playing in my mother’s jewellery box. I think wearing jewellery is almost carnal. It was one of the earliest forms of adornment and I think I was born intrinsically attracted to it.”

Where did you grow up and how has your childhood influenced where you are today?

“I’ve had a crazy chaotic and wonderful life spread across the globe, I’ve been very blessed! I was born and bred in Hong Kong where my family lived for 33 years. From the ages of 8 to 18, I went to boarding school in the UK in Dorset, I then went travelling across the globe and moved to Australia for six and a half years where I completed my Fine Art Degree. Following that, I’ve settled back here in South West London.”

How did you get into the jewellery industry?

“After completing my Fine Art Degree, I worked by chance in an independent, well established London jewellers, where I started as a maternity cover in a PA role. What a lucky find! I fell in love with the trade.  As a small company, I soon found myself immersed in the world of jewellery and I became accomplished in production and how to make jewellery. It was definitely the place that inspired me to do this for myself. I feel like I am doing exactly what I was meant to do and that is something very few people get the honour and blessing of being able to say.”

What drove you to start your own line, Georgina Boyce Fine Jewellery?

“I was working really really hard for somebody else and my friends were all starting to get engaged, so I think it was just a natural progression for me to branch out and do it for myself.  I trained in Gemmology and specialised in diamonds at the Gemmological Institute of Great Britain. Following that, I trained in Jewellery Design at The Gemological Institute of America. My training both in the workplace and in educational institutions, tied in with my age, made it a very easy decision. I was being approached to make engagement rings before I had even set up my own company. I made seven engagement rings in my first two months. The rest fell into place!”

"My jewellery is minimal, fragmented, shiny and in some cases aggressive. Much like the city life out there!"

Where did you source inspiration for your debut ready-to-wear collection, Geo?

“I was patient to make my own ready-to-wear collection, as I wanted to have a loyal client base before I took the leap! It has really helped to curate my customer and has allowed me to make more affordable pieces that are more accessible to the masses. My debut ready-to-wear collect is based on Cubism.  Most people would presume this wouldn't translate to jewellery but I wanted to create pieces that toyed with perspective and create intrigue from every angle. The amazing architecture and concrete jungle that is Hong Kong has definitely carved out some heavy influences in my jewellery. My jewellery is minimal, fragmented, shiny and in some cases aggressive. Much like the city life out there!”

Values are hugely important to us at JewelStreet. What are your core brand values at Georgina Boyce Fine Jewellery?

“I believe in transparency. I think the jewellery trade can seem a little slippery at times and I am desperate to change that. Educating your customer so they can make informed decisions is paramount. Every bespoke client I have comes and sits with me at my table, informally in my home and can inspect stones under the loupe, learn how their jewellery is made, what the cost-effective options are. It can be daunting for customers, particularly the generally terrified men I hand hold through the engagement ring process! They are like a deer in headlights at the beginning and they (hopefully!) finish the process feeling informed, confident and ready to get on that knee!”

Where do you create your best work?

“At home, with Radio 4 on in the background and endless cups of tea. When I’m working, my usually immaculate OCD space is turned upside down! I need to feel entirely nested to concentrate to the level you need to for mechanical drawing.”

"I want young women to feel like they can and should be able to enjoy wearing luxury jewellery."

Are there any clients you are particularly proud of?

“I’ve been lucky enough to have some fabulous writers and editors wearing my jewels as paying customers such as Pandora Sykes, Alex Steadman of The Frugality, Katrina Israel of ES magazine, Natasha Tomalin of The Stylist, Polly Vernon of Grazia, Alice Edwards of ST Style and many others which has helped me no end. They are all such wonderfully fashionable and current women who rep my brand with infinite style! I couldn’t ask for more inspiring women to wear my jewels!”

How do you want someone to feel when they’re wearing a piece of Georgina Boyce jewellery?

“Empowered! I know that sounds utterly ridiculous as it’s just a piece of jewellery but I think jewellery is a real ego booster. Because of the achievable pricing, most of the pieces in my ready-to-wear collection are bought by women for themselves. Breaking away from the preconceived notions that men buy you diamonds or that fine jewellery is something unattainable. I want young women to feel like they can and should be able to enjoy wearing luxury jewellery.”

What’s been the high point of your career so far?

“Oh, I couldn’t pick one! Releasing my debut RTW collection was a truly amazing moment. It transformed my brand from bespoke boutique to a flourishing label. It’s been an absolute dream!  Then again, I feel proud with every piece I hand over to a happy client. Having happy customers is probably the most important element. Without their custom, Georgina Boyce Fine Jewellery would not be!”

What does the future hold for Georgina Boyce Fine Jewellery?

“There is so much I still have to achieve. I’ll be bringing out my second RTW collection later this year which I am very excited about. After the success of the first collection, I’m feeling a lot of pressure so hopefully it will be received positively! I would like to see GBFJ in some more retail spaces and I have my eyes on a few future exciting collaborations and projects, so definitely keep your eyes peeled! I am driven to succeed. I need this to work! Aside from the fact that I have poured every penny I have into this, I have worked myself to the bone. I eat, sleep, walk and talk Georgina Boyce Fine Jewellery and I would be broken if it didn’t continue to grow. I love what I do.”
