As Milan fashion week drew to a close, a sneak preview of the Met Gala 2018 was presented to the fashion elite in none other than the Palazzo Colonna.
The reason for the Palazzo Colonna?
A preview of the Vatican treasures that will go on display at the Metropolitan Museum of Art this May when the exhibition opens.
The theme, Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination, will explore fashion's relationship with the devotional practices and traditions of Catholicism.
"Some might consider fashion to be an unfitting or unseemly medium by which to engage with ideas about the sacred or the divine," curator Andrew Bolton said on Monday. "But dress is central to any discussion about religion. It affirms religious allegiances and, by extension, it asserts religious differences."
So while we wait in baited breath for May to arrive, we check out some of our favourite looks from yesteryear.
Rihanna, 2015, China: Through the looking glass
If you could bet on anyone to make a fashion statement, it would be Rihanna, and she certainly didn’t disappoint in 2015. Rocking a furry, yellow, robe-like ensemble by Guo Pei, her extra long train trailed behind her showing off the beautiful, embroidered detail.
Her accessories didn't go unnoticed by us either! A crown-like, filigree headpiece delicately framed the look and was complimented by the mother of all multilayered choker necklaces!
Lady Gaga, 2015, China: Through the looking glass
In the same year as RiRi, Lady gaga also wowed the crowd. We know that Lady Gaga will always be one to watch at the Met Gala. Her fearlessness is evident, especially when it comes to putting on a show for her 'little monsters'. She wore a Balenciaga Kimono accompanied by a killer headdress and giant drop earrings!
Emily Ratajkowski, 2017, Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garçons: Art of the In-Between
The newly married, 26-year-old model and actress floated down the red carpet in a Marc Jacobs dress that even mermaids would be jealous of. The shimmering sequin dress in a striking blue-green palette recalls Van Gogh’s famous “The Starry Night” painting. We were far more interested in her incredible hoop earrings, intricately decorated with a rainbow of precious gemstones.
Cassie, 2017, Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garçons: Art of the In-Between
Cassie's black On Aura Tout Vu gown with a huge, spiky train was accented with some seriously dramatic and sparkling ear cuffs.
Sarah Jessica Parker, 2013, Punk: Chaos to Couture
In a move that Carrie Bradshaw would be proud of, SJP floated down the red carpet in true couture punk style. Complete with a giant mohawk designed by famed milliner, Phillip Tracy. She paired the extravagant look with simple, understated jewels.
