Live for the moment, then take it with you. That’s the motto at Dune Jewelry. The Boston-based brand uses sand from your favourite beach to create a unique piece of collectable jewellery that captures your fondest memories. Holly Daniels Christensen launched the brand in 2010 after years of making beach sand jewellery for her friends and family.
The concept of being able to wear a piece of jewellery that holds a cherished memory from a cherished place really took off and the brand grew rapidly. You can either send Dune some sand you’ve collected or pick from their extensive ‘Sand Bank’ which features beaches from locations all over the world. Dedicated to making the world around us a better place, Dune Jewelry donate a portion of every sale to support coastal preservation efforts. We chat to the woman behind the brand.
How did Dune Jewelry begin?
“I was working with my best friend creating ornaments with beach sand from different parts of the world, which exposed me to so many beautiful colours and textures that I didn't realise sand possessed. It was the combination of the beauty and the sentimental value of sand from specific locations that inspired me to create Dune Jewelry.”
How is your jewellery made?
“Each piece is custom made to order in our studio using the customer’s sand of choice and a patented resin process. We meticulously set each grain of sand to ensure the beauty and longevity of each piece.”
"We have a Sand Bank filled with sand from over 3,300 locations around the globe."
How do you source the sand?
“We have a Sand Bank filled with sand from over 3,300 locations around the globe. However, often our customers will send in their own sand from a special trip or adventure.”
Do you work with any charities?
“Yes, we work with Joslin Diabetes Center, The Association to Preserve Cape Cod and SMILEMASS to help bring beach wheelchairs to public beaches.”
Where do you find inspiration for your designs?
“I get inspiration through travel and nature. I also found it incredibly inspiring when a customer called to tell me that Dune Jewelry made his wife cry as she opened the piece and realised it was sand from the Grand Canyon, where they had their first vacation together.”
"We create tangible reminders of precious moments, exciting adventures and unique life experiences"
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?
“Surround yourself with people who inspire you and do things "better" than you. It creates amazing motivation and a culture that invites respect and learning.”
What are your core brand values?
“Dune Jewelry sparks adventure and encourages daydreams. We create tangible reminders of precious moments, exciting adventures and unique life experiences, and the worth of our jewellery lies in its emotional and sentimental value. Plus, we believe our customers are always right!”
If you could be anywhere in the world right now, where would you be?
“The Maldives, because I have an obsession with staying in one of the over-water villas. They look incredible and I want my baby girls to be able to feel like mermaids.”
Where’s your go-to meeting spot?
“My ‘kitchen table’! I began making sand jewellery in my home at my kitchen table. When I moved from my home to our 2,000 square ft. studio, we had the table refinished for our conference room.”
"I see Dune Jewelry evolving into the bridge between experiences and jewellery."
What sort of music do you have playing in the studio?
“What don't we play? We have a team of 20+ artists so it ranges - 80's rock, Otis Redding, folk, contemporary movie soundtracks and disco in the morning.”
What’s your favourite quote?
“If you have built castles in the air, your work need not be lost; that is where they should be. Now put the foundations under them.” - Henry David Thoreau
What does the future hold for Dune Jewelry?
“We have so many exciting plans! I see Dune Jewelry evolving into the bridge between experiences and jewellery. We're the Original Beach Sand Jewellery Company bringing you experiential jewellery from around the world.”
